Emergency crews deployed 354 operatives and 11 aircraft to a woodland blaze in Mouriscas while containing a second two-front fire in Vila Real.
Outbreak and rapid escalation in Abrantes
Emergency responders mobilized hundreds of firefighters on Saturday afternoon to suppress a forest fire in Mouriscas, situated in the municipality of Abrantes within the Santarém district. The initial alert was registered at 15:11, following reports of a blaze advancing through woodland with high intensity, two active fronts, and multiple fire projections. Regional emergency services moved quickly to concentrate ground and aerial units at the perimeter. The Sub-regional Command for Emergency and Civil Protection of Médio Tejo detailed the initial operational scaling during the first hour of deployment.

Road closures and containment operations
The mobilization in Abrantes expanded steadily throughout the late afternoon as ground conditions required additional resources. By 17:15, response teams included 352 operatives, 102 ground vehicles, and 11 aircraft, with numbers rising to 354 personnel and 103 vehicles by nightfall. The Médio Tejo regional civil protection command reported that no residential houses were under immediate threat from the fire. Firefighters faced operational difficulties caused by steep, inclined terrain that hindered direct vehicle and foot access to the fireline. Heavy crawler machinery deployed to assist containment efforts.
To safeguard public movement and clear routes for emergency vehicles, the National Republican Guard (GNR) Abrantes Detachment closed multiple roads in the vicinity. Traffic was halted on National Road 358 (EN 358) between Cabeça das Mós and Mouriscas. Authorities also shut down the road connection linking Mouriscas with the localities of Entre Serras, Lercas, and Queixoperra.
Second blaze in Santa Marta de Penaguião
While teams contained the fire in Santarém, a second wildfire required intervention in Santa Marta de Penaguião, located in the Vila Real district of northern Portugal. That fire burned with two separate fronts, one of which raised elevated concern among incident commanders due to its behavior and direction. Civil protection officials noted that no villages or populated settlements stood in the direct path of the flames.

The Douro Sub-regional Command deployed 140 operatives to the Santa Marta de Penaguião incident, reinforced by 33 ground vehicles and five firefighting aircraft. Together, the two forest operations in Abrantes and Vila Real mobilized nearly 500 emergency personnel across the country. Douro sub-regional commander Luís Miguel Fonseca confirmed that resources remained focused on suppressing the most active front before evening conditions altered wind behavior.
Weather conditions and response coordination
The active firefighting operations coincided with a day where extreme temperatures across mainland Portugal began to ease, though forest fires continued to present complex operational challenges. Civil protection authorities maintained continuous surveillance to counter embers and aerial projections caused by the intense heat. Operations in both Mouriscas and Santa Marta de Penaguião continued past dusk to consolidate perimeters and secure unburned pockets of vegetation.
