Trump turns US 250th into political rally as record heat disrupts celebrations
President Donald Trump used the semiquincentennial to attack Democrats and cast the evening event as a Trump rally, while extreme heat forced the cancellation of the Independence Day parade and delayed the Great American State Fair.
Aviation spectacle
More than 30 military flyovers crossed the National Mall on Saturday as part of the "Salute to America 250 Aviation Spectacle." The aerial processions began in the early afternoon and were scheduled to continue until just before 11 p.m., with aircraft passing overhead roughly every 18 minutes. The lineup included stealth fighters, bombers, Osprey hybrid vehicles, and the new Air Force One plane gifted by Qatar. A B-1 bomber was set to perform a nighttime pass with its afterburner on to close the show.
Political divisions on display
The semiquincentennial became a stage for partisan messaging. President Trump used the holiday to mock Democrats, writing on social media,
He later billed the evening event as a "Trump rally." Democratic governors Gavin Newsom and Wes Moore, both potential 2028 contenders, released speeches casting Trump's presidency as a betrayal of American ideals. Newsom said,Has anyone ever seen a Happy Dumocrat?
Former President Bill Clinton issued a statement warning of "deep division" and arguing the administration had brought the country "close to the edge."This is one man trying to do to our American self-government what no king and no foreign power has ever managed to do.
Heat disrupts celebrations
A record-breaking heat wave with heat indexes up to 115°F forced organizers to cancel the annual Independence Day parade and delay the opening of the Great American State Fair until noon. The reading of the Declaration of Independence at the National Archives was moved indoors. Trump downplayed the conditions, posting,
A severe thunderstorm watch was also in effect for the evening.Despite the heat, which isn't as bad as predicted, the crowds in D.C. are INCREDIBLE!
Fair and controversies
The Trump-linked Freedom 250 organization, which the president established via executive order and chairs, organized the fair and other events. The fair drew criticism for sparse crowds, a mock-up of a Trump-proposed triumphal arch, and allegations from House Democrats that it funneled resources away from the congressionally approved America250 commission and operated with little transparency. Some Democratic-led states refused to participate.
Evening finale
Trump was scheduled to deliver remarks at the Lincoln Memorial at 10 p.m., followed by a 40-minute fireworks display billed as the world's largest, with over 850,000 fireworks launched from barges in the Potomac River. The B-1 bomber flyover was set to precede the fireworks just before 11 p.m.
