S&P Dow Jones Indices upgrades Poland to developed market status for 2027
S&P Dow Jones Indices will reclassify Poland from emerging to developed market status in September 2027, shifting the weighting of Polish equities across global investment benchmarks.
Market reclassification decision
S&P Dow Jones Indices decided to reclassify Poland from an emerging market to a developed market on Thursday. The global index provider confirmed that the new classification will formally take effect with the September 2027 index reconstitution. The decision follows an evaluation process initiated in June 2026, when S&P DJI opened consultations regarding the country's market status. According to the criteria established by the index provider, Poland's quantitative and qualitative metrics meet or exceed the standards required for developed market classification. S&P DJI had previously flagged the prospective upgrade in mid-July 2026, noting that the Polish economy demonstrated resilience during recent economic and political challenges. Egypt was the only other country evaluated during the 2026 consultation cycle, but S&P DJI chose not to upgrade its status, leaving it within the emerging market category.
Impact on index weightings and listed corporations
The status change will alter Poland's presence within international equity benchmarks and passive portfolio tracking systems. Under current index configurations, Poland accounts for 1.27% of the S&P Emerging basket and approximately 1.4% of the Dow Jones Emerging Markets index. When the transition takes effect in September 2027, Poland's estimated weighting in the S&P DJI Developed basket will adjust to approximately 0.15% due to the larger overall capitalization of the developed market universe. The change will reassign several of the largest companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange, including PKO BP, Orlen, Allegro, Pekao, KGHM, and PZU, from emerging market baskets into developed market benchmarks. S&P DJI announced that it will publish a detailed list of all affected indices as the implementation date draws closer.
- S&P Emerging basket
- 1.27 %
- S&P Developed basket (projected)
- 0.15 %
Government and stock exchange reactions
Polish government officials and stock exchange executives welcomed the index decision in statements issued on platform X. Finance Minister Andrzej Domański stated that the classification change serves as confirmation of the country's growing international economic position. Domański described Poland as the fastest-growing large economy in the European Union and noted that Polish representatives will participate in a G20 meeting in the United States next week. The Warsaw Stock Exchange described the upgrade as an important confirmation of domestic economic strength and capital market maturity. Warsaw Stock Exchange Chief Executive Officer Tomasz Bardziłowski acknowledged the operational tasks that remain while praising the trajectory of the exchange.
We still have a lot of work ahead of us, but today's S&P DJI decision is further proof that we are on the right track.
The multi-year transition process
The upgrade concludes a review timeline that began when S&P DJI placed Poland on its formal monitoring list in July 2025. S&P DJI classifies stock exchanges into developed, emerging, and frontier categories based on strict evaluation metrics. The organization assesses factors including market size, trading liquidity, accessibility for foreign investors, market infrastructure, and underlying macroeconomic and political conditions. S&P DJI, a division of S&P Global, oversees global market benchmarks such as the S&P 500 in the United States and the 30-firm Dow Jones Industrial Average. Polish securities will continue to trade within the emerging market indices for just over a year until the technical reconstitution takes place in September 2027.
