Poland faces 25°C warmth before sharp October cooldown and mountain snow
A warm maritime polar airmass will bring highs of 25°C to southwestern Poland on Thursday before a sequence of cold fronts introduces widespread rain, sub-zero valley frost, and possible mountain snowfall by 9 October.
Continental high pressure and Thursday warmth
The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) reported that Poland began 1 October 2026 under the influence of a high-pressure system centered over western Russia, which channeled a warm maritime polar airmass across the country. Morning observations recorded temperatures ranging from 2°C locally in the east and 10°C in central Poland to 16°C in the southwest under mostly clear skies. Across the wider European continent, high-pressure areas over western Russia and the Bay of Biscay governed conditions, bounded by a deep low-pressure system near Iceland and a shallow low over the eastern Mediterranean. Atmospheric pressure in Warsaw was forecast to reach 1018 hPa at noon with mild fluctuations. Early morning fog lingered over eastern and southern terrain depressions and river valleys, restricting visibility to 300 meters before dissipating.
Regional contrasts and Sudetes wind gusts
Thursday daytime conditions brought sunny or cloudless skies across nearly the entire territory, with slightly more cloud cover developing over southwestern districts. Daytime highs reached 17°C in northeastern Poland and along the Hel Peninsula, rose to 20°C in central areas including Warsaw, and reached between 24°C and 25°C in the southwest. Winds remained weak in the southwest but blew moderate and periodically gusty from the southeast and east across other regions. Mountain areas faced severe gusts, with elevated ridges in the Sudetes recording morning winds up to 100 km/h before easing to 70 km/h during the afternoon.
- Highs reach 24–25°C in southwestern Poland while morning wind gusts reach 100 km/h in the Sudetes.
- Light rain arrives along western borders in the evening as daytime temperatures reach 23°C in the south.
- Showers move into Pomerania and northwestern Poland with temperatures between 16°C and 22°C.
- Daytime temperatures fall to 13°C in the northeast and 15°C in central Poland.
- Widespread daytime highs across Poland decrease to 13–15°C.
- Zakopane records a high of 3°C with snowfall possible in mountain areas.
Overnight frost risk and Friday conditions
Clear skies across Poland on Thursday night will accelerate radiational cooling, lowering nighttime temperatures to 10–12°C in western regions and along the Baltic coast, 4°C locally in the center, and 3°C in the east. Mountain basins will experience colder conditions, dropping to between 1°C and 3°C in the Carpathian basins and falling to -1°C in the valleys of the Bieszczady mountains. Nighttime wind will remain weak to moderate in the west with southeastern gusts reaching 60 km/h high in the Sudetes, accompanied by morning fog limiting visibility to 300 meters. Friday will begin sunny before cloud cover increases from the west during the afternoon, bringing weak rainfall to western border areas by evening. Friday high temperatures will reach 19°C in the northeast, northwest, and Hel Peninsula, 22°C in central districts, and 23°C across Silesia and Lesser Poland, with winds shifting to southwesterly and westerly in the west.
Weekend rain and the mid-October cold front
A transition toward autumn weather begins over the weekend as cloudiness and scattered showers move into northwestern Poland and Pomerania on Saturday, while southern and central areas maintain sunny skies. Saturday temperatures will range from 16–17°C in northern Poland and Podhale to 20°C in the center and 22°C in the south. Rain will spread across a larger portion of the country on Sunday, even as regional temperatures briefly reach 22°C. A colder airmass arrives on Monday, 5 October, lowering daytime highs to 13°C in the northeast and 15°C in central regions, while the southeast holds at 21°C. Cooler and rainier conditions will persist on Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by a drop to 13–15°C nationwide on Thursday, 8 October. By Friday, 9 October, Zakopane is forecast to record a daytime high of 3°C with snow possible in the mountains, though IMGW seasonal models suggest October as a whole could still average slightly above normal with periodic returns to 15–20°C.
