Poland expects early frosts before temperatures drop to 9-14°C in mid-October
Anticyclone Borchert will bring sub-zero night temperatures to southern valleys this week before an incoming Arctic air mass lowers Polish daytime highs to 9–14°C after 8 October.
Anticyclone Borchert delivers golden autumn with local frost
Anticyclone Borchert is moving into position across Poland to replace the departing high pressure system Arno, continuing warm daytime weather alongside chilled nights. On Thursday, 1 October, skies will remain cloudless across the territory without a drop of rain, though gusty winds will blow in the Sudeten foothills. Daytime highs will reach 17°C in north-eastern areas and on the Hel Peninsula, approximately 20°C in central regions, and between 24°C and 25°C in the south-west. Following sundown, temperatures will drop to 10–12°C along the coastline and in western voivodeships, around 10°C in the center, and down to 3°C in the east. The lowest temperatures will occur in southern valleys, where Carpathian basins will range between 1°C and 3°C, and the Bieszczady valleys will experience ground frosts reaching -2°C.
Frontal clouds and weekend pressure changes
Friday, 2 October, will repeat the sunny pattern with daytime values reaching up to 23°C in southern Poland. Increasing clouds will develop across western districts during Friday afternoon, bringing possible light evening rain. In the night from Friday to Saturday, scattered drizzle will extend into north-western areas and Pomerania, while Carpathian valleys will record another round of frost at -1°C. This initial freezing sequence will conclude over the weekend as the atmospheric system becomes influenced by passing low pressure troughs. Cloudiness will increase across northern regions during the weekend, but mild daytime conditions will remain in place before further pressure adjustments take place.
- Anticyclone Borchert brings daytime highs up to 25°C and night frosts down to -2°C in Bieszczady
- Daytime warmth reaches 23°C in the south with Carpathian basins dipping to -1°C overnight
- Anticyclonic weather regime remains dominant across Poland until European pressure fields shift
- The Azores High over the Atlantic begins directing cooler air toward Central Europe
- Daytime temperatures fall to 9–14°C through 13 October as Arctic air enters northern Europe
Azores High realignment and mid-October Arctic cooling
The anticyclonic weather regime will maintain its grip across Poland through Monday, 5 October, according to tvnmeteo.pl synoptician Tomasz Wakszyński. A broader atmospheric restructuring will begin over Europe on Tuesday and Wednesday, 6–7 October, when the Azores High expands over the Atlantic Ocean. This change will establish a north-easterly circulation pattern that routes colder air masses directly toward Central Europe. Between 7 and 13 October, Arctic air will cover Scandinavia and north-western Russia, driving night temperatures to between -15°C and -5°C in northern Norway, northern Sweden, and nearby Russian territory. Polish daytime highs will fall to between 9°C and 14°C from 8 to 13 October as northern and north-western winds push through the country.
Long-range model forecasts for late 2026
The lack of precipitation across Poland will continue until at least 8 October, leaving the country under a wide dry zone on European rainfall maps. Numerical forecasts from the Global Forecast System model, operated by the National Centers for Environmental Prediction, show October temperatures finishing between 0.5°C and 1.5°C above multi-year averages, particularly in eastern and southern Poland. November is also projected to remain approximately 1°C warmer than typical seasonal baselines, with daytime highs averaging 5°C to 10°C alongside frequent morning fogs and overcast skies. December is forecast to track closer to standard multi-year norms, introducing recurring multi-day winter episodes with snowfall.
