German forward JJ Peterka traded to Boston Bruins, will play under Marco Sturm next season
German national team forward JJ Peterka is heading to the Boston Bruins in a trade with the Utah Mammoth, moving from one NHL franchise to another after a single season in Salt Lake City.
The trade
German ice hockey forward JJ Peterka is leaving the Utah Mammoth after one season, traded to the Boston Bruins. Utah receives the 23rd overall pick in the current NHL draft plus a selection in the 2028 talent exchange. Peterka, 24, joins a Bruins team coached by former German national coach Marco Sturm.
A coach he knows
Peterka will play under Sturm, who became the first German-born head coach in NHL history last season and led the Bruins to the playoffs. The move pairs a national team player with a coach who previously led Germany’s senior side.
Diminishing role in Utah
Peterka scored 25 goals for the Mammoth but saw his ice time drop as the season progressed. He averaged 18 minutes and 11 seconds early on; by year’s end that had fallen to 15 minutes and 59 seconds per game. The reduced role likely contributed to the trade.
Career so far
The winger has accumulated 92 goals and 105 assists across 320 NHL regular-season games. His next chapter begins in Boston, where he will aim to reclaim consistent top-line minutes under a coach familiar with his game.
