Investigation and suspect identification
A special team from the Directorate for Combating Arson Crimes (D.A.E.E.) travelled from Athens to assist the Thessaloniki investigative unit. Through evidence collection, witness statements, and methodical inquiry, authorities identified a 76-year-old local man as the prime suspect. He was initially brought in for questioning around midnight.
Arrest and confession
The man was arrested under the flagrante delicto procedure after confessing that sparks from his vehicle ignited the dry vegetation. Checks confirmed he was under the influence of alcohol at the time. He now faces charges of causing a fire and will be brought before the prosecutor.
