Matheus Nunes on choosing Portugal over Brazil, beach adaptation, and Diogo Jota's biography ahead of World Cup opener
Portugal midfielder Matheus Nunes told a press conference in Palm Beach that he feels equally Brazilian and Portuguese but chose to represent Portugal because football gave him everything there. He also defended the squad's beach visits as part of climate adaptation and revealed he is reading the late Diogo Jota's biography.
Press conference in Palm Beach
Matheus Nunes spoke to reporters at the Gardens North County District Park on Monday, two days before Portugal's World Cup opener against the Democratic Republic of Congo. The 27-year-old Manchester City player addressed his national team choice, the squad's preparations in Florida's heat, and personal memories of his late former teammate Diogo Jota.
It was difficult to make the decision to choose Portugal because I feel I am both equally. My mother was very important in that decision. In football I owe more to Portugal than to Brazil.
The midfielder, who started his career aged 14 at Ericeirense and later played for Estoril and Sporting, has 20 caps and two goals for Portugal.
Beach visits and storm disruption
Nunes brushed off criticism of the players' trips to the beach near the team hotel, saying they were part of a planned schedule to adjust to Florida's climate. A thunderstorm forced the cancellation of Sunday's training session, but he said the squad was unfazed.
That's part of the work plan to adapt to the climate. I spend all year in Manchester, where there is no heat like this. It's a brutal difference.
He recalled similar disruptions during the 2025 Club World Cup in Palm Beach and said players must be ready for weather delays during matches.
Reading Diogo Jota
On the flight to the United States, Nunes was photographed carrying a biography of Diogo Jota, the Portuguese forward who died in a car accident in July 2025. Nunes said he was discovering new details about his former Wolverhampton teammate.
Diogo's career was one of overcoming. It wasn't easy for him. He had a very beautiful and successful career. I'm sure he is watching over us.
Nunes added that Jota's journey was an inspiration and said the team carries him in their hearts and on a wristband.
Rúben Dias injury doubt
While Nunes addressed the media, centre-back Rúben Dias continued individual training away from the main group. The 29-year-old is yet to train with the squad since arriving in the United States and is the only fitness concern for coach Roberto Martínez before the opening match.
Portugal's first two Group K matches will be played in Houston, with the final group game against Colombia in Miami.
- Portugal vs DR Congo, 12:00 local (18:00 Lisbon), Houston
- Portugal vs Uzbekistan, 12:00 local (18:00 Lisbon), Houston
- Portugal vs Colombia, 19:30 local (00:30 28 June Lisbon), Miami
World Cup ambitions
Nunes, who played just 17 minutes in qualifying, said he never doubted he could be called up and called the World Cup "the most beautiful competition in the world". He said the team wants to win the title for captain Cristiano Ronaldo, whom he described as an honour to share a dressing room with.
Ten years ago I was in the sixth division of Portugal. I never imagined playing with Cristiano Ronaldo. If we can win the title for him, it would be special.
