Failed overtaking on A3 near Hamminkeln: 40-year-old suffers life-threatening injuries
A 19-year-old driver rear-ended a car on the A3 motorway near Hamminkeln early Saturday, leaving the other motorist with life-threatening injuries, police said.
Crash on the A3
At an early hour on Saturday morning, a 19-year-old driver from Rees was traveling at high speed on the A3 motorway in the district of Wesel, heading towards Arnhem. As he approached a 40-year-old motorist in the right lane near Hamminkeln, he attempted to overtake but failed to switch lanes in time. The younger driver’s vehicle rammed into the rear of the car ahead.
Injuries
The impact left the 40-year-old with injuries so severe that he was initially in a life-threatening condition, according to police. No details were released about the younger driver’s condition. Emergency services were deployed to the scene, and the motorway was temporarily obstructed.
Investigation
Police are examining the exact circumstances of the crash, with a focus on excessive speed and the novice status of the 19-year-old. The A3 is a heavily used autobahn, and rear-end collisions at high speed often result from mistimed lane changes.
