Kim Jong Un unveils new nuclear fuel plant, orders 'exponential' expansion of North Korea's arsenal
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited a newly inaugurated nuclear material production facility and announced plans to expand the country's nuclear forces 'at an exponential rate,' state media reported Thursday.
The facility visit
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited a newly inaugurated nuclear material production plant on Wednesday, state news agency KCNA reported on Thursday. Photos released by state media showed Kim walking through narrow aisles lined with dense rows of silver tubes and pipes, in what appeared to be a large centrifuge hall. Another image showed him speaking with senior officials in a meeting room, where a blurred graphic depicting a cone-shaped object was spread across a table. It was not immediately clear whether the graphic showed a warhead design.
KCNA said the facility used 'more sophisticated technology' but did not provide further details, such as where it is located or when it began its operation. The disclosure came less than two years after North Korea unveiled another covert uranium-enrichment plant in September 2024, its first public disclosure of such a facility since showing one at the Yongbyon nuclear complex to visiting American scholars in 2010.
Production claims
During the visit, Kim claimed that North Korea's weapons-grade nuclear materials production capacity has more than doubled compared with five years ago, according to KCNA. There are virtually no ways to independently verify his claim. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) had already assessed in April that North Korea had expanded its nuclear weapons production capacity 'very significantly.' The IAEA estimates North Korea possesses dozens of nuclear warheads.
The urgency for bolstering up the country's nuclear war deterrent, both in quality and quantity, has grown because of confrontations with the most ferocious enemies.
The exponential plan
After a meeting at the facility, Kim and other top officials 'confirmed the order of priority for implementing the ambitious future plan designed to beef up our state's nuclear forces at an exponential rate,' KCNA reported. Kim cited 'existing threats that are worsening day by day, potential threats, and unpredictable long-term crises' as justification for the accelerated buildup.
We have adopted an ambitious future plan aimed at strengthening our state's nuclear forces at an exponential pace.
Recent weapons tests
Earlier this week, North Korea tested a new rocket launch system and a new cruise missile weapon system, with Kim personally supervising the tests on Tuesday. KCNA reported that a 'high-precision autonomous navigation system' was used during the test. The South Korean military confirmed the launches, stating that North Korea fired a short-range ballistic missile into the Yellow Sea along with 'several projectiles.'
International context
North Korea has been under strict UN sanctions for 20 years because of its nuclear weapons program. Pyongyang withdrew from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in 1993 and has since conducted six nuclear tests and dozens of ballistic missile tests, some of which experts say are capable of reaching US territory. In 2022, North Korea declared its nuclear power status 'irreversible.' The regime has barred IAEA inspectors from accessing its nuclear facilities since 2009. Its first nuclear test was conducted in 2006.
The leadership in Pyongyang consistently maintains it will never give up its nuclear weapons, arguing they are necessary for deterrence against what it calls military threats from the United States and allied states such as South Korea. The regime considers its nuclear arsenal, estimated at a few dozen warheads, as a life insurance policy against any foreign attempt to invade its territory or overthrow its regime.
