Lando Norris takes Dutch Grand Prix pole in Zandvoort ahead of George Russell
Lando Norris set a lap time of 1:11.163 to take pole in Zandvoort, narrowly beating Mercedes rivals George Russell and Kimi Antonelli as rain arrived in Q3.
Norris takes pole in rainy qualifying
Lando Norris secured pole position for the Dutch Grand Prix with a lap time of 1:11.163 around Circuit Zandvoort, edging out Mercedes drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. Rain began falling over the North Sea coastal dunes in the closing minutes of the third qualifying segment, forcing drivers to set their times early and preventing late track improvements. The result gave the McLaren driver his second consecutive pole position, continuing his momentum from winning in Hungary prior to the summer break. After climbing out of his cockpit in the garage, Norris voiced his elation over the team radio.
The best lap of my life!
Norris finished 0.102 seconds ahead of Russell, while 19-year-old championship leader Antonelli took third place, 0.133 seconds off the benchmark. Oscar Piastri qualified fourth in the second McLaren, leaving the fastest four drivers separated by a margin of 0.142 seconds.

Russell wins sprint as Antonelli falters in Q3
Earlier on Saturday, Russell converted pole position into a lights-to-flag victory in the 24-lap, 100-kilometer sprint race. The British driver withstood late pressure as light rain appeared in the closing laps, securing his third sprint victory in six attempts this year alongside previous wins in China and Canada. Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc finished second after making the only front-running pass of the sprint on lap 18, while Norris finished third and Antonelli crossed the line in fourth. However, Antonelli suffered a setback in the afternoon qualifying session when an error on his final lap thwarted his bid for pole.
I was constantly on the back foot and made a mistake in Turn 1 on the last lap, through which I lost a few tenths and missed the chance for pole position.
Despite missing the front row, Antonelli maintains a lead of more than 50 points at the top of the World Championship standings. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff noted that Sunday's Grand Prix offers full opportunity to convert the pace into substantial points.
Red Bull struggles and midfield adjustments
Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton, who sits second in the drivers' championship, qualified in fifth position behind Piastri, with teammate Leclerc finishing sixth. Local favourite Max Verstappen could only manage seventh place for Red Bull, struggling for competitive speed despite the support of more than 100,000 fans at the circuit. The qualifying result came two days after Red Bull announced a contract extension with Verstappen running through the end of 2030.
We are simply too slow.
Further down the order, Audi driver Gabriel Bortoleto advanced to ninth on the starting grid after missing points in the morning sprint. His teammate Nico Hülkenberg qualified 13th following an engine replacement between sessions, avoiding any grid penalties because the new power unit came from his permitted season allocation.
- George Russell wins the 24-lap sprint race ahead of Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris.
- Audi replaces the power unit on Nico Hülkenberg's car without incurring a grid penalty.
- Oscar Piastri sets the fastest time in the opening segment while Max Verstappen advances.
- Lando Norris clocks a 1:11.163 lap time to claim pole position before rain curtails running.
Overtaking constraints on the dune circuit
Circuit Zandvoort presents severe challenges for overtaking due to its narrow track width, lack of lengthy straights, and steep 18-degree and 19-degree banking in key turns. Drivers noted that passing on track remains nearly impossible without significant pace advantages, making grid position the critical factor for Sunday's race. The Grand Prix will be the provisionally final Formula 1 event held at the seaside circuit before it leaves the calendar. The 72-lap main race begins on Sunday at 15:00 local time.
