The Hungaroring, a circuit that rewards aerodynamic efficiency, has become something of a private garden for McLaren. The Woking team arrived in Budapest having won the previous two editions of the Hungarian Grand Prix, both as dominant one-two finishes: Oscar Piastri led home Norris in 2024, and the order was reversed a year later. No other team had managed a hat-trick of victories at the track since the start of the current regulatory cycle. On Sunday, McLaren looked poised to add another double podium to that sequence, only for a late mechanical drama to intervene.

Norris breaks his 2026 duck

Reigning world champion Lando Norris had endured an uncharacteristically barren run by his own standards: eleven races without a win, and not a single pole position all season. That changed across the Budapest weekend. He seized pole on Saturday and converted it into a controlled, front-running victory on Sunday, the 12th of his Formula 1 career. It was his first visit to the top step since the Brazilian Grand Prix last November. His win also ended a run in which only Mercedes and Ferrari drivers had stood on the highest podium in 2026.

Championship leader Antonelli holds firm

Behind Norris, Max Verstappen took second place for Red Bull, continuing his consistent if winless run. Kimi Antonelli, fresh from his own triumph at Spa-Francorchamps exactly one week earlier, claimed the final podium spot for Mercedes. The Italian's third place was a strong result for the championship leader, who increased his cushion at the head of the drivers’ table. The two Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton finished fourth and fifth, but Hamilton's afternoon was complicated by a 5-second penalty, the latest in a series of sanctions for the seven-time champion this season. Isack Hadjar, driving for the second Red Bull team, took sixth, the best finish of the French contingent.

Piastri's misfortune shuts the door on a one-two

Oscar Piastri's race was cut short by a gearbox failure that struck his McLaren. The retirement denied the team not only a near-certain one-two finish but also valuable constructors’ championship points at a venue where they had been untouchable for three consecutive years. The mechanical issue occurred at a moment when both McLaren cars were running inside the podium positions, and the team had already shown race-winning pace.

Calendar tweaks and the summer pause

The Hungarian round, the 11th of the season, is the last race before the sport's traditional August shutdown. Formula 1 will return with a sprint weekend at the coastal dunes of Zandvoort in the Netherlands, where a sprint race on Saturday 22 August will precede the main Grand Prix on Sunday 23 August. Separately, officials announced before the race that the Bahrain Grand Prix, originally scratched from the calendar in early April, will be replaced by a new event in Malaysia. That addition lifts the 2026 schedule to a total of 23 rounds.
