Greek Deputy Minister Nikos Tagaras Dies at 70 After Cancer Battle, Leaving Legacy of Spatial Planning Reform
Nikos Tagaras, Greece's Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy and a New Democracy MP for Corinthia, died on Friday, May 29, 2026, at the age of 70 after a long battle with cancer, prompting an outpouring of tributes from across the political spectrum.
A life in public service
Nikos Tagaras, the Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy and a Member of Parliament for Corinthia with the ruling New Democracy party, passed away on Friday, May 29, 2026, at the age of 70. His death followed a prolonged and difficult battle with cancer, which he fought with what colleagues described as dignity and courage. The news prompted immediate and heartfelt reactions from Greece's top political figures, including the Prime Minister, the President of the Republic, and leaders of opposition parties.
With deep sadness I say goodbye to a rare human being, an invaluable colleague and a beloved friend.
A career from local to national government
Born in 1956 in Chiliomodi, Corinthia, Tagaras studied civil engineering at the National Technical University of Athens. His political career began in local government, where he served as President of the Community of Chiliomodi from 1987 to 1994 and later as Mayor of Tenea from 1999 to 2002. He was elected Prefect of Corinthia in 2002 and re-elected in 2006, winning both times in the first round. He entered national politics in 2012, being elected as an MP for Corinthia in both the May and June elections.
His ministerial roles included serving as Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy from 2014 to 2015 in the coalition government of then-Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, and again as Deputy Minister from 2020 to 2023. He was re-elected in the 2023 elections and was appointed once more as Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy.
Today a friend and a fighter has passed away. Close to the ordinary citizen, he served his homeland, Corinthia, with passion.
The legacy of spatial planning
A central theme in the tributes was Tagaras's dedication to the major reform of Spatial and Urban Planning. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis noted that Tagaras passed away before the project could be completed, but expressed his belief that it would stand as his most significant legacy to the country. Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou, his direct superior, echoed this sentiment, calling the spatial planning reform "the great legacy he leaves behind" and a duty for his colleagues to continue and complete.
The urban and spatial planning is the great legacy that Nikos leaves behind and we have a duty to continue and complete it.
Political tributes and personal loss
The ruling New Democracy party issued a formal statement mourning the loss of a politician who "served the homeland and the party with dignity, fighting spirit, and honesty." The statement highlighted his deep connection to Corinthia and the affection he earned from his fellow citizens. President of the Republic Konstantinos Tasoulas emphasized that Tagaras's long public presence was one of "offering and dedication to democratic values and principles."
Opposition leader Nikos Androulakis, president of PASOK, also offered his sincere condolences, describing Tagaras as "a moderate politician who honored the Parliament with his stance." Former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras remembered him as both a friend and a fighter, praising his deep knowledge and service as a minister. Prime Minister Mitsotakis's personal message was particularly poignant, mourning the loss of a "steady comrade and sincere interlocutor" whose calmness, kindness, and clear gaze he would always remember.
