Romanian President Nicușor Dan arrived in the Czech Republic on Wednesday, 30 September 2026, for an official visit following an invitation from Czech President Petr Pavel. The diplomatic schedule included formal meetings with Pavel, the Czech prime minister, and the leaders of the Czech Parliament. High-level discussions between the Romanian and Czech officials focused on expanding bilateral cooperation, reinforcing European security, deepening economic relations, and coordinating within the defense industry. Both heads of state evaluated shared strategic interests across Central and Eastern Europe, where defense collaboration and regional commercial partnerships remain central to bilateral policy.

Status of the annulled election report

During his press appearances in Prague, Dan responded to questions concerning the promised official report into Romania's annulled presidential elections. The issue resurfaced after former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu was placed in preventive detention for 30 days within a criminal case. Dan reiterated that the document would be produced, while explaining that a five-month domestic political crisis had altered his executive priorities and stalled planned governance initiatives.

Before the political crisis emerged, the examination of the annulled electoral process was among the top three items on his presidential agenda. Dan acknowledged that the five-month political disruption had interrupted numerous state programs that were previously set in motion.

Maybe many things should have happened if we had not had this five-month crisis, which took us all back from the things we were engaged in.

Cultural ties and university exchanges

Dan also traveled to the Romanian Embassy in Prague to hold an extended meeting with members of the Romanian community in the Czech Republic. Addressing community leaders, Dan commended Romanian citizens residing in the country for their professional standing, work ethic, and contribution to Romania's image abroad. He pointed out the constructive role played by local associations and the Romanian Orthodox parish in structuring diaspora life, suggesting that institutions inside Romania could learn from how expatriates organize.

The discussions addressed the importance of cross-cultural and academic ties between the two countries, including Czech language courses offered at universities in Romania and Romanian language instruction at Czech universities. Dan explained that because Romania and the Czech Republic share a geographic space and operate in an economy where scale is critical, joint prosperity requires mutual trust developed through education, literature, cinema, and direct citizen contacts.

Mobilizing diaspora expertise and national direction

Speaking to community members alongside his presidential adviser for relations with Romanians abroad, Dan characterized the coordination of collective energy as the central dilemma facing Romanian society over the past 37 years. He called on diaspora professionals to approach Romanian authorities directly with proposals, advising them not to wait for bureaucratic initiatives from Bucharest. Dan emphasized that Romanians abroad possess accumulated expertise that the state needs, urging professional organizations to partner with public institutions to channel skills into Romania's development.
