Newcastle United sign Amar Dedic from Benfica for €35.9m on five-year deal
Newcastle United have completed the signing of Bosnia and Herzegovina full-back Amar Dedic from Benfica for €35.9 million, reuniting him with manager Matthias Jaissle on a five-year contract.
Transfer agreement and financial terms
Newcastle United have completed the signing of Bosnia and Herzegovina full-back Amar Dedić from Benfica on a five-year contract running until 2031. The official announcement coincided with the defender's 24th birthday and includes an option for a further year. Benfica confirmed the transaction in an official filing to the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM), disclosing a fixed transfer fee of €35.9 million (reported in the UK as £29.5 million). Under the terms of the deal, Benfica secured 17.94% of any future capital gain if the player is sold again. RB Salzburg, where Dedić played before moving to Lisbon, will receive 15% of the net capital gain after deductions for acquisition costs and solidarity payments. Newcastle retained the 5% solidarity mechanism allocated to training clubs, while Benfica will pay a 10% intermediation commission on the transfer value.

Reunion with Matthias Jaissle
The transfer reunites Dedić with Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle, who recently replaced Eddie Howe at St. James' Park. Dedić previously developed under the German coach during spells at Austrian sides FC Liefering and RB Salzburg. The tactical understanding addresses an immediate defensive void on Tyneside, where first-choice right-back Tino Livramento continues his rehabilitation from a calf injury. Capable of playing at both right-back and left-back, Dedić took squad number 37 and is in line to make his Premier League debut at home against Liverpool on Sunday.
Dedić highlighted his previous working relationship with Jaissle as a decisive factor in choosing the English club.
Working with Matthias again was a big factor for me. We know each other well; he knows what I can bring to the pitch and I'm really happy to play for him again. It's a special feeling and a real honour to join Newcastle.
Benfica spell and international experience
Dedić departs Benfica after a single season in Lisbon, having joined the club from RB Salzburg in 2025 following a loan spell with Marseille in France. During his campaign at the Estádio da Luz, the full-back contributed one goal and four assists in between 43 and 46 appearances across all competitions, helping the team secure the Portuguese Supertaça. His place in the starting lineup under manager Marco Silva had recently faced competition from Danish defender Alexander Bah. On the international stage, Dedić represented Bosnia and Herzegovina at the 2026 World Cup, playing in three fixtures for his national side.
After the completion of the transfer, Dedić shared a message on social media expressing gratitude to Benfica's president, coaching staff, and supporters.
Some chapters end, but they leave a mark on us. Representing Benfica was one of the greatest honours of my life.

Regional market activity
The acquisition of Dedić represents Newcastle's sixth signing of the summer transfer window. Nearby rivals Sunderland also completed a defensive transfer on Tuesday, agreeing a £25.6 million deal for 20-year-old Toulouse defender Dayann Methalie. Sunderland secured the France Under-21 international on a five-year contract at the Stadium of Light after competing against both Newcastle and Roma for his signature. Methalie made 28 Ligue 1 appearances last season and joins manager Régis Le Bris's squad to compete with Reinildo for a starting place in defense.
