Netflix integrates TF1 live channels and on-demand shows in France, a first-of-its-kind streaming-broadcast tie-up
Starting June 19, Netflix subscribers in France can watch five live TF1 channels and thousands of hours of on-demand programming without leaving the platform, though advertising remains even on ad-free plans.
A year after shaking up the European television market with a surprise alliance, France's TF1 Group and Netflix have officially gone live with their distribution partnership. The deal, which both companies call a world first, folds TF1's entire streaming and live offer into the Netflix experience in France.
A test case for broadcasters
Rather than license TF1 programming title by title, Netflix is carrying the TF1+ service itself inside its app. The model has been closely watched by European media groups as a potential blueprint for bridging linear television and streaming audiences. TF1 remains responsible for programming, advertising sales and rights management, while Netflix provides distribution, the product interface and its recommendation technology. Neither company has disclosed how ad revenue is split.
What's on offer
From Friday, Netflix members can tune into five live channels: TF1, TMC, TFX, TF1 Séries Films and the 24-hour news channel LCI. The catalogue adds major sporting events including Rugby Nations Championship matches and France's national football team games, daily soaps such as "Demain nous appartient" and "Ici tout commence," scripted series from "Diplôme" to "La Cible," and powerhouse entertainment franchises like "Koh-Lanta," "Secret Story," "Dancing with the Stars" and "Star Academy." All on-demand replays from TF1+ are included, though paid premium options (such as a future Star Academy live channel) are not.
How it works
TF1 content appears as a seamless part of the Netflix interface, sitting alongside originals like "Lupin" in rows like "Continue Watching," "My List" and the "Top 10." The streamer's algorithm serves personalised suggestions drawn from TF1's library. Programming is delivered via TF1's API and hosted on Netflix servers, streaming in Full HD with the possibility of 4K later. The integration is available only to subscribers in France.
Rights and advertising
Advertising runs alongside all TF1 content, even for Netflix users on the highest ad-free tier. TF1 retains full control over ad sales and is responsible for securing the underlying rights for all shows, some of which are supplied by major international distributors who were not consulted before the deal was announced. While neither side has detailed how rights issues were resolved, the arrangement has raised concerns among producers and sales houses that such aggregation could constrain future licensing opportunities.
People have more entertainment choices than ever, so we have to consistently give them the best variety of TV and films in a seamless and personalised way.
Netflix subscribers will now get to enjoy the very best of TF1 television like never before — from our news programs and biggest rugby and football matches to beloved shows like Star Academy and Koh-Lanta.
