Nepali authorities instructed emergency teams and border residents to evacuate on Friday after an overflowing barrier lake in Tibet threatened downstream settlements already hit by deadly mudslides.
Emergency flood alert issued in Nepal
Nepal Police issued an emergency flood alert on Friday, 28 August 2026, following the rupture of a barrier lake across the border in Tibet. The lake formed after a glacier collapsed on Wednesday, sending a massive wall of water and mud through communities on both sides of the frontier. The initial disaster killed at least 472 people, including 469 confirmed dead on the Nepalese side, with more than 1,400 people still reported missing. Authorities in Nepal warned emergency crews and residents along the river basin that new flood waves could arrive rapidly. The collapse two days earlier had already caused widespread destruction across the Himalayan border corridor, where rescue teams had been searching for survivors.
Police officials published the directive on social media platform X to mobilize emergency responders and alert vulnerable communities.

Chinese rescue operations halted at Gyirong
Across the border in Tibet, Chinese authorities suspended rescue operations at the centre of the disaster zone around midday on Friday as overflow began. Water started spilling out of the barrier lake and flowing toward the Gyirong border post, the primary sector affected by Wednesday's catastrophe. An on-site reporter from Chinese state television CCTV stated that all emergency teams were instructed to remain in place and await updated instructions.
The suspension followed warnings from Beijing overnight between Thursday and Friday regarding a high risk of breach. Chinese authorities had deployed nearly 700 firefighters to the Gyirong area, supported by aerial drones and search dogs, before rising water forced personnel to pause operations. Officials reported that the lake had accumulated behind a dense barrier of mud and rock dislodged during the glacier collapse.
Nepal Army evacuates tunnel workers
South of the border, the Nepal Army mobilized two helicopters to assist roughly 100 workers trapped inside a construction site tunnel cut off by debris. The office of the prime minister of Nepal confirmed that military teams had already evacuated 350 workers and local residents from the sector. The government noted that those operations were conducted under high-risk circumstances made difficult by severe weather and surging floodwaters.
Military spokespersons confirmed that search operations continue wherever ground access remains feasible.

Rainfall increases risk of further breaches
The Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported that the water reservoir in Tibet could reach three million cubic metres within three days due to continuous heavy rain. Xinhua stated that the reservoir presents a high risk of further rupture and overflowing, which could unleash significant flooding into downstream Nepalese valleys.
Wednesday morning's initial torrent destroyed entire villages along the mountainous border corridor, an area popular with international tourists. Regional security forces and disaster management teams in both China and Nepal remain stationed to monitor water levels along the vulnerable river system.
