A massive glacial collapse near Langtang Lirung sent a torrent of water and debris across the Nepal-Tibet border, killing at least 389 people and destroying infrastructure along the Bhotekoshi river.
Glacial detachment and debris surge
A massive section of an unnamed glacier on the southern face of the 7,200-metre peak Langtang Lirung detached at roughly 5,200 metres altitude, falling more than 1,000 metres into the valley below. The collapsing mass measured approximately 1.5 kilometres by 1 kilometre and up to 200 metres in thickness. The impact generated a magnitude 5.2 seismic tremor recorded by the United States Geological Survey. Pressure and kinetic force melted vast volumes of ice, mixing with rock and sediment to unleash a torrential surge along the Bhotekoshi river corridor between Tibet and Nepal. Hydrologists at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development reported that river levels climbed nine metres within thirty minutes.
The cause of this disaster was that a large part of a glacier plunged down. That caused an enormous ice and debris avalanche, which was the trigger for the flood.
Destruction along the border corridor
The surge swept southwards along the border crossing at Rasuwagadhi and Gyirong, washing away bridges, roads, and riverside infrastructure. Flooding extended across Rasuwa, Dhading, and Nuwakot districts north and west of Kathmandu, destroying hydropower stations, farmland, and community settlements. In the village of Syabrubesi, the torrent arrived within ten minutes of crossing the frontier, leaving minimal time for downstream communities to evacuate. Around 9:00 AM on Wednesday, Nepalese authorities sent approximately 600,000 SMS alerts, though many recipients received warnings only after water had reached their areas. More than 1,000 people remain missing across affected valleys as communications and electrical links remain severed.

Emergency response and rescue operations
The official death toll reached 389 by Thursday night, according to the Nepalese police, with officials anticipating higher numbers as debris is cleared. Emergency operations led to the rescue of 573 individuals on Thursday, including 350 workers extracted by the Nepalese army from a flooded hydropower tunnel in Rasuwa district. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority mobilised thousands of emergency personnel to conduct searches across severed transport corridors. Medical treatment stations and tent encampments were set up near the affected valleys to assist survivors and treat injuries. Prime Minister Shah visited the disaster area to oversee response operations.

Cross-border challenges and environmental factors
The disaster follows prior flood incidents in the region, including the destruction of the Friendship Bridge a year earlier after a glacial lake outburst. Researchers at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development had previously identified 47 hazardous glacial lakes across the Himalayan mountain system. Earth scientists from Utrecht University pointed to melting permafrost and changing temperature patterns as primary factors destabilising hanging glaciers. Cross-border warning protocols between China and Nepal had been discussed following earlier disasters, but coordinated early-alert systems were not fully implemented before the event. International aid organisations and diaspora community groups initiated emergency fundraising and logistics support to deliver provisions to cut-off districts.
