Over 148,000 Romanian eighth-graders begin National Evaluation with Romanian language exam

Over 148,000 Romanian eighth-graders sit the first written test of the National Evaluation on Monday, with the Romanian language and literature exam marking the start of a week of assessments that will determine high school admission.

Exam structure and key details

More than 148,000 graduates of the eighth grade across Romania began the National Evaluation on Monday, 22 June, with the written test in Romanian language and literature. The examination is being held in 2,956 educational units and exam centres nationwide, according to data submitted by county school inspectorates.

Students had access to centres between 8:00 and 8:30, with the exam starting at 9:00 after identity verification. The total working time is 120 minutes, counted after candidates fill in their identification details (a 15-minute process). Those who finish early may leave the room only after the first hour, i.e. not before 10:00.

Students for whom this request has been approved by the County/Bucharest Municipality Examination Commission benefit from an extension of working time, by up to two hours, under the procedure for equalizing opportunities for students with visual impairments, hearing impairments, and neurodevelopmental disorders who take the national examinations in 2026.

The written paper is structured in two subjects. Subject I, worth 70 points, presents two unseen texts followed by nine questions testing grammar, vocabulary and morpho-syntactic analysis. Subject II, worth 20 points, requires an argumentative text or a composition of at least 150 words, closely linked to one of the support texts. A further 10 points are awarded ex officio.

Timetable for the 2026 session

The Romanian language exam is the first of three tests. Mathematics follows on Wednesday, 24 June, and students who studied in a national minority language will also take a mother tongue test on Friday, 26 June.

National Evaluation 2026 key dates
  1. Romanian language and literature written exam
  2. Mathematics written exam
  3. Mother tongue exam for national minority students
  4. Initial results publication
  5. Final results after contestations

Results will be displayed anonymously using individual codes. The initial scores are due on 1 July, after which candidates may view their papers and, if desired, submit an appeal. Final results, after the resolution of appeals, will be published on 8 July, and the marks serve exclusively for computerised high school admission based on the average and the options filled in by students.

Rules for candidates

Candidates must present a valid identity document and may use only blue ink or blue paste pens for writing; black pencil is allowed for diagrams and drawings. Correction is done by striking through the wrong answer with a horizontal line and writing the correct one next to it.

All electronic devices (mobile phones, smart watches, headphones) and any auxiliary materials (textbooks, dictionaries, notes, compilations, summaries) are strictly forbidden in exam halls. Non-compliance leads to elimination from the exam, regardless of whether the prohibited items were actually used. Examination rooms are under audio-video surveillance.
