Lorenzo Musetti to miss Wimbledon 2026 as thigh injury recovery continues
Italian tennis player Lorenzo Musetti confirmed he will not compete at Wimbledon, citing incomplete athletic preparation after a left thigh muscle injury suffered in Rome.
Injury and recovery status
Lorenzo Musetti has not played since being forced to retire during his Internazionali d'Italia match against Casper Ruud in Rome. The injury, a tear to the rectus femoris muscle of the left thigh, also kept him out of Roland Garros. The 24-year-old described the rehabilitation as progressing well, with encouraging medical results, but acknowledged that full athletic preparation has not yet begun.
I want to update you on my recovery from the Rome injury: the rehabilitation is going very well and the medical results are encouraging. Unfortunately, not having yet started a complete athletic preparation, and after careful evaluation, we have come to the difficult conclusion that this year I will not be able to compete at Wimbledon.
Withdrawal decision
Musetti called the choice to skip the third Grand Slam of the season a necessary one. The decision was announced on his social media accounts on 17 June 2026, roughly twelve days before Wimbledon begins on 29 June. He stressed that returning at full fitness is the priority.
It’s not an easy decision, but it’s the right one. My priority is to get back on court at 100 percent. Thank you for your constant support – see you soon.
Tournament implications
The withdrawal opens a spot in the Wimbledon main draw for compatriot Matteo Berrettini, who will take Musetti’s place. Musetti’s absence continues a difficult stretch for the Italian, who has now missed two consecutive major events.
Ranking impact
A small positive for Musetti is that his ranking will not suffer significantly, because he had few points to defend from the equivalent period last season. The ranking buffer offers him time to complete his recovery without immediate pressure.
