Munich CSD parade marches through record heat: 200 groups, 300,000 expected for Pride weekend
More than 200 groups marched through central Munich for the Christopher Street Day parade at noon on Saturday, kicking off a three-day Pride festival expected to draw upwards of 300,000 visitors despite exceptionally high temperatures.
Under the motto "Our Diversity. Our Strength", the Munich CSD parade drew thousands to the city centre at midday, with participants making their way from Erhardtstrasse along the Isar to Ludwigstrasse between Odeonsplatz and Siegestor. Organisers said more than 200 groups joined the colourful political march, and the adjoining street festival on Ludwigstrasse is expected to attract over 300,000 people by Sunday.
Heat precautions and confidence
Record-threatening heat prompted the organisers to set up drinking water stations, water spray zones, and beer gardens with sunshades along the Pride mile. Attendees were urged to use SPF 50 sunscreen, cover their heads, and drink plenty of fluids; regular stage announcements reminded the crowd to take care. The medical service was also specially briefed. Conrad Breyer of CSD Munich said no major heat-related incidents had occurred by afternoon.
It's only once a year and such a wonderful event for the community and for the whole of Munich – everyone always looks forward to it.
Patron and political backdrop
The 2026 edition is the first under the patronage of Munich's Lord Mayor Dominik Krause (Greens), who is gay. The event is also intended as a counterweight to a sharp rise in anti-queer incidents in Bavaria. According to the counselling centre Strong!, such incidents increased from 289 to 413 in the past year, ranging from everyday discrimination and insults to sexual harassment and violence.

Bavaria is cosmopolitan and tolerant. In the Free State, everyone can live and love as they wish – that is the Liberalitas Bavariae.
