Mosquito swarm forces Ryanair Milan–Alicante flight to change aircraft, causing three-hour delay
Flight FR1423 from Milan Malpensa to Alicante was delayed by nearly three hours on 2 July after hundreds of mosquitoes invaded the cabin during boarding, forcing passengers to disembark and wait for another aircraft.
What happened on the evening of 2 July
Ryanair flight FR1423 was preparing to depart from Milan Malpensa airport for a late evening journey to Alicante, Spain. Boarding had already taken place, but the aircraft doors were still open when a growing number of mosquitoes began pouring into the cabin. One passenger described the scene as an "incredible number" of insects that made staying inside the aircraft extremely difficult. As doors remained open, the mosquitoes kept entering for several minutes.
Attempts to control the insects
Crew members first tried to manage the situation by switching off the cabin lights, hoping to reduce insect activity. After roughly half an hour with no improvement, a fumigation of the aircraft was attempted, according to sources familiar with the episode. The treatment, however, proved insufficient to eliminate the insects, and the airline ultimately decided to substitute the aircraft.
Passenger allergy raises alarm
Compounding the hygiene concern, a young woman on board stated that she was allergic to mosquito bites. Witnesses later recalled that the situation could have turned into a far more serious medical event. The combination of the allergic passenger and the uncontrolled insect presence led the crew to order all passengers to disembark and return to the terminal for health and safety reasons.
Disembarkation and three-hour delay
Once back inside the airport, the travelers were directed to a different gate to await a replacement aircraft. The entire process, from the initial boarding to departure on the new plane, accumulated a delay of almost three hours. The passenger who documented the episode with mobile phone photos said hundreds of people were left incredulous by what had occurred.
Similar incident on Naples-bound flight
Italian media also reported that a flight bound for Naples experienced a two-hour delay in the previous hours for the same reason: mosquitoes entered the cabin in large numbers. The back-to-back episodes, while unusual, can happen in areas where large mosquito populations exist, especially when aircraft doors remain open for extended periods during boarding.
