Drones strike Moscow refinery and residential areas, killing two after deadly Ukraine attacks

Drone strikes across the Moscow region

Russian authorities reported that Moscow and the surrounding region faced an overnight drone strike in the early hours of Sunday, 20 September 2026. Andrei Vorobyev, the governor of the Moscow region, stated that Russian air defense units shot down 249 drones across the area. The strikes caused casualties and property damage in several residential communities. In Sofyino, a drone struck a three-storey residential building, killing a 44-year-old woman and injuring five others, including two children. In the Orekhovo-Zuevo district, an elderly man died after a private residence was hit. Regional officials confirmed a total of two fatalities and six injuries from the overnight strikes, while a warehouse caught fire. In a third affected district, emergency responders evacuated 400 residents after a drone hit a building and ignited a fire.

Vorobyev commented on the ongoing situation in a post on Telegram:

Refinery damage and aviation disruption

Within the capital city, municipal authorities reported direct damage to energy infrastructure alongside transport groundings. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated on Telegram that air defenses intercepted at least 186 drones, revising an earlier count of 152 drones heading toward the capital. Sobyanin confirmed that a production facility located inside the Moscow oil refinery was damaged during the attack, though no casualties were reported at the plant.

In central Moscow, another drone struck a building near one of the capital's main boulevards. The overnight assault prompted safety measures across Moscow's air travel network. Vnukovo airport halted all inbound arrivals and outbound departures, while Sheremetyevo, the largest airport serving the capital, warned passengers of temporary flight limits.

Fatal strikes in Kyiv and Sumy regions

The drone attack on Moscow followed fatal Russian aerial strikes across Ukraine on Saturday, 19 September 2026. Ukrainian officials reported that Russian strikes killed seven people, including two children, across the Kyiv and Sumy regions. In the city of Fastiv, located in the Kyiv region, regional head Tymur Tkachenko stated that a mother, her young son, and her young daughter died when strikes damaged several private houses. In the north-eastern Sumy region, top local official Oleh Hryhorov confirmed that four people died when a Russian drone directly hit the car they were traveling in.

Targeting of transport and energy facilities

The overnight assault on the Russian capital and the preceding attacks in Ukraine occur as both sides intensify strikes against transport networks, logistics centers, and energy assets. The Moscow oil refinery hit during Sunday's attack had previously been targeted by Ukrainian drone operations in earlier months. Russian President Vladimir Putin launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and both militaries continue to deploy long-range aerial weapons against strategic industrial sites and regional population centers.
