Tour de France 2026: Stage 2 from Tarragona to Barcelona set to test puncheurs and GC contenders
The first road stage of the 2026 Tour de France, a 168.5 km route from Tarragona to Barcelona, features three ascents of the Montjuïc climb and could see early attacks among overall contenders.
Stage profile
The 168.5 km stage starts in Tarragona and heads along the coast before turning inland. After 80 km of flat roads, the peloton faces the category-2 Côte de Begues (6.1 km at 6.5%). The decisive section comes in the final 30 km, where riders must climb the 1.6 km Montjuïc (9.3% average) three times, with the last summit just 2.5 km from the finish at Barcelona's Olympic stadium. The final 700 metres rise at 7%. Wind along the coastal roads could also create echelons.
Favorites and GC battle
The stage suits explosive puncheurs and GC leaders alike. Mathieu van der Poel, Mauro Schmid, Ben Healy, Maxim van Gils, Alex Baudin, and French champion Romain Grégoire are among the stage win contenders. For the overall classification, Tadej Pogacar, Remco Evenepoel, Primoz Roglic, and Paul Seixas are expected to test yellow jersey Jonas Vingegaard, who wears the leader's jersey for the first time since his 2023 Tour victory. The previous day's team time trial already created time gaps among the favourites.
It will be punchy, similar to what we offered in Bilbao and Bologna. It will also be a fight for the general classification that day.
Route modification
Course director Thierry Gouvenou revealed that the original first part of the stage was altered due to a swine flu epidemic, forcing the removal of a climb overlooking Barcelona. The revised route still delivers a challenging finale.
