Polish health minister discloses 725,000 zł in other 2025 income as house transfer and prosecutor's probe fuel controversy
Jolanta Sobierańska-Grenda's asset declaration for 2025 shows 725,000 zł in 'other income', including a non-compete fee from her former employer and a Podlaskie contract now examined by prosecutors, while a property transfer to her husband shortly after taking office intensifies transparency questions.
A contested disclosure
Jolanta Sobierańska-Grenda, who replaced Izabela Leszczyna as Poland's health minister on 24 July 2025, published her 2025 asset declaration on 1 July 2026, noting she did so voluntarily. The document quickly drew attention for listing about 725,000 zł gross as 'other income' alongside her ministerial salary of roughly 113,000 zł gross (July–December 2025) and rental income of roughly 63,000 zł. The minister initially declined to detail the sources during a Wirtualna Polska interview, saying only that she takes full responsibility for her professional life. Pressure from media and opposition forced a detailed breakdown the following day on the ministry's social media.
This is a reliably reported income. Everything is transparent. From reliable and honest work, whether as a legal advisor, manager, or lecturer. I take full responsibility for my professional life.
Anatomy of 725,000 zł
The ministry's statement separates the sum into three blocks: 530,221.66 zł gross from Szpitale Pomorskie, composed of a fixed portion of 2025 salary, a variable bonus for 2024, and compensation for a non-competition clause tied to a management contract; 128,000 zł gross from a cooperation agreement with the Podlaskie Voivodeship, a project that ended in April 2025; and the remainder from scientific-didactic work. All amounts are before tax.
- Szpitale Pomorskie (salary, bonus, non-compete)
- 530221.66 PLN
- Podlaskie Voivodeship contract
- 128000 PLN
- Scientific-didactic activity
- 66778.34 PLN
The house that disappeared from the register
A month after entering government, on 25 August 2025, Sobierańska-Grenda donated her share of a 109 m² house and a 637 m² plot near Malbork to her husband. The property, valued at 420,000 zł, had been marital co-ownership. The transfer, revealed by Wirtualna Polska through land register records, required a prior separation of assets, though the ministry has not clarified when or why it occurred.
Podlaskie contract under prosecution
The 128,000 zł contract, signed on 23 December 2024, tasked Sobierańska-Grenda with drafting a long-term consolidation strategy for five medical entities in Podlaskie. She was to receive 32,000 zł gross per month for four months. PiS councilors, led by former voivodeship marshal Artur Kosicki, reviewed the documentation and argued the work delivered was merely a preliminary draft, not the full strategy required. A prosecutor's investigation into the agreement is ongoing.
The contract was simply not fulfilled in its entirety as specified in the subject of the contract.
Minister’s defense and public mood
Sobierańska-Grenda insists the disclosure demonstrates her commitment to transparency, though it was not legally required. She stresses that her only additional activity since taking office, permitted by law, is scientific-didactic work, and that the Podlaskie project concluded before she joined the cabinet. An IBRiS poll published in May 2026 showed 45.4% of Poles rate the health system's performance negatively under her leadership, while 28.1% see a clear deterioration.
