Migrant dies as kwassa-kwassa capsizes near Mayotte during Comorian coast guard interception

A migrant died on Sunday 16 August 2026 after the boat carrying eleven Comorian migrants capsized off the coast of Mayotte. The vessel was a "kwassa-kwassa", a large traditional fishing boat. According to a police source cited by AFP, the craft overturned after a Comorian coast guard vessel attempted to board it. One of the eleven migrants aboard died in the incident.

Survivors on Chissioua Mtsamboro

The ten survivors disembarked on the island of Chissioua Mtsamboro, located at the northern end of the Mayotte archipelago. They were awaiting the arrival of French authorities, according to the same police source. No further details on their condition or processing status were reported.

A heavily used migration route

Mayotte, a French department in the Indian Ocean, is separated from the Comoros by roughly 70 km of sea and is a regular destination for clandestine crossings. Ouest France reports that nearly half of Mayotte's population holds foreign nationality, the majority being Comorian. The route is known for its high death toll.

Previous deadly incident

In November 2024, at least 25 people perished when their boat sank off the Comores. Survivors and the International Organization for Migration attributed that shipwreck to smugglers who deliberately sank the vessel.
