Francesca Michielin weds Davide Spigarolo among sunflowers in Bassano del Grappa, then flees on a red Vespa
The Italian singer-songwriter married osteopath and former high jumper Davide Spigarolo on Friday, June 26, at the Pieve di Sant'Eusebio, surrounded by hundreds of sunflowers and a small circle of family and friends.
A private ceremony in her hometown church
Francesca Michielin, 31, and Davide Spigarolo, 32, married on Friday, June 26, in the Pieve di Sant'Eusebio in Bassano del Grappa, the Veneto town where the singer was born and raised and where the couple now lives together. The ceremony was kept strictly private, with a limited guest list of family and close friends. Private security was deployed and access to the church was temporarily restricted. The parish bulletin, which normally lists upcoming celebrations, made no mention of the wedding.
Sunflowers and symbolic details
The nave of the church was transformed with hundreds of sunflowers, a flower the singer particularly loves. Michielin wore a simple, elegant white dress with long sleeves and a medieval-inspired silhouette, finished with a tulle shoulder cover. Spigarolo chose an elegant brown suit with a sunflower in the buttonhole, though one report described it as an orange gerbera. The couple entered the church together, hand in hand, skipping the tradition of the groom waiting at the altar for the bride.
Unconventional choices during the rite
Three priests officiated the ceremony, and the couple chose not to sit in front of the altar. Instead, they sat among the priests, facing their family and friends. The homily was delivered by abbot Don Andrea Guglielmi, who wove references to Michielin's songs, including "Distratto", "L'amore esiste", "Battito di ciglia", and "Fango in paradiso", together with Spigarolo's sporting background. The groom is a former high jumper and now works as an osteopath and athletic trainer. During the ceremony, Michielin surprised guests by singing "Hallelujah" by the American band Haim. The wedding rings were delivered by the bride's grandparents, and the couple's cousins read messages of congratulations from the altar.
A four-year love story
The couple's relationship began during their school years but became public only in 2022. They chose June 26 as their wedding date because it marks the period when they first started seeing each other. Spigarolo is the son of Gabriella Dorio, the 1984 Olympic 1500-metre champion. In a recent interview with FqMagazine, Michielin spoke about why she chose to marry him.
He knows what it means to fall, to get hurt, to be injured, to live in constant dialogue with your body. He knows what it's like to be exhausted because you have to tour, you can never go home, and above all he is a person with immense empathy who always finds the good in everything.
Spigarolo supported Michielin through her kidney removal surgery, one of several health challenges she has faced publicly.
The Vespa getaway
After the ceremony, the newlyweds left on a red Vespa, a scene that several Italian outlets compared to Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck in the film "Roman Holiday". A video of their departure circulated online, shared by Luca Zaia, the president of the Veneto region. The couple rode through the streets of Bassano del Grappa to greet residents before heading to a secret location to celebrate the start of their married life together. The Vespa getaway broke with traditional wedding protocol and became one of the most widely shared images from the day.
