Mexico beats Ecuador 2-0 at the Azteca to reach the World Cup round of 16 for the first time in 40 years
Goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez carried the host nation past Ecuador in a rain-delayed round-of-32 match, sending Mexico to the knockout stage for the first time since 1986.
A storm-delayed start
A thunderstorm over southern Mexico City pushed kick-off back by one hour, the second weather disruption of the tournament after the France-Iraq group match was suspended last week. More than 80,000 fans stayed in their seats at the Estadio Azteca, singing Juan Gabriel and waiting for the storm to pass.
First-half blitz
When play began, Mexico overwhelmed Ecuador from the opening whistle. Gilberto Mora, the 17-year-old midfielder, tested goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez twice in the first quarter-hour. The breakthrough came in the 22nd minute: Julián Quiñones intercepted a loose ball, sprinted past the high Ecuadorian back line and fired into the top corner. Ten minutes later, Quiñones turned provider, slipping a through ball to Raúl Jiménez, who finished calmly for 2-0.
The team showed great order and lethal finishing when it mattered.
Ecuador's muted response
Ecuador, who had beaten Germany in their final group match, managed only one clear chance in the first half, a long-range strike from John Yeboah that goalkeeper Raúl Rangel tipped onto the post. In the second half, Mexico ceded possession but Ecuador could not convert it into danger. Rangel kept his third consecutive clean sheet; he and Spain's Unai Simón are the only goalkeepers yet to concede in the tournament.
A 40-year wait ends
Mexico last won a World Cup knockout tie in 1986, also at the Azteca, also by a 2-0 scoreline, against Bulgaria. The victory sets up a round-of-16 match on Sunday 5 July, again in Mexico City, before the team would travel to the United States for any further rounds.
- Scheduled kick-off delayed by one hour due to thunderstorm
- Match kicks off at Estadio Azteca
- Julián Quiñones scores to make it 1-0
- Raúl Jiménez doubles the lead to 2-0
- Full-time: Mexico 2-0 Ecuador
Off-field tensions
Ecuador's preparations were disrupted when their flight from Columbus, Ohio, arrived late on Monday due to Mexico City traffic, and fans gathered outside the team hotel overnight, honking horns and revving motorcycles. Ecuador lodged a complaint with FIFA. During the match, the crowd directed a homophobic chant at Galíndez on goal kicks, a practice FIFA has sanctioned repeatedly, most recently with a partial stadium closure in Puebla a month ago.
