MLS fines Lionel Messi over stoppage-time altercation with Quinn Sullivan
The MLS Disciplinary Committee fined Lionel Messi for hands to the face or neck of Philadelphia Union player Quinn Sullivan during a 2-2 draw on 19 August.
The MLS Disciplinary Committee has issued a financial fine to Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi following a physical confrontation with Philadelphia Union player Quinn Sullivan. The league determined that the 39-year-old forward violated standard player conduct rules governing physical contact with an opponent's head, neck, or face. The ruling followed an official league review of events that took place after the 101st minute of the regular-season match played on 19 August. While the league confirmed the disciplinary sanction through an official statement, it did not state the specific cash sum assessed against the player.
The MLS Disciplinary Committee has fined Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi for violating the league's rule regarding hands to the face, head, or neck of an opponent, in the 101st-plus minute of the match against the Philadelphia Union on August 19.
On-pitch altercation in stoppage time
The confrontation occurred deep into stoppage time during the closing stages of the fixture between Inter Miami and Philadelphia Union. Messi approached Sullivan, and the pair engaged in an immediate verbal argument near the touchline. During the heated exchange, Messi struck Sullivan on the back of the neck and the face with his hand, after which both players briefly confronted each other head-to-head. The center referee had his back turned at the precise moment of physical contact but intervened quickly to break up the confrontation and prevent a wider team brawl. Neither the referee nor the video assistant referee sanctioned Messi with a yellow or red card during the match itself, leaving the incident to post-match league review.

Match contributions and personal bereavement
The disciplinary controversy followed Messi's direct on-pitch contributions in the 2-2 draw against Philadelphia. Messi participated directly in both goals scored by Inter Miami during the contest. He initiated the sequence for Miami's first goal by providing the pass before the assist, and later scored the team's second goal himself. The goal marked his first since the death of his father, Jorge Messi, who passed away on 8 August. Despite the offensive production from their captain, Inter Miami failed to secure a victory and lost ground in the Eastern Conference standings.
Undisclosed fines and league procedure
Following the conclusion of the round, the MLS Disciplinary Committee reviewed video footage of the stoppage-time incident to determine whether retroactive disciplinary action was required. The committee confirmed the fine against Messi and also announced a separate financial penalty against his Inter Miami teammate Ian Fray for an infraction during the same match. In line with previous league announcements regarding player conduct violations, MLS did not disclose the monetary penalties assigned to either athlete. The disciplinary ruling did not include a match suspension, keeping both players available for selection.
