Jean-Philippe Mateta loses FIFA and tribunal appeals over Crystal Palace contract
An independent Premier League tribunal and FIFA have rejected bids by striker Jean-Philippe Mateta to void the final year of his Crystal Palace contract, leaving the 29-year-old bound to the club until June 2027.
Legal challenges rejected
Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta has failed in separate attempts before an independent Premier League tribunal and world governing body FIFA to rule the final year of his contract invalid. The 29-year-old France international challenged the remaining 10 months of his agreement at Selhurst Park, which runs through June 2027. Mateta originally joined Palace from German side Mainz 05 in 2021 on an initial 18-month loan before completing a permanent transfer in January 2022 on a four-and-a-half-year contract. That deal included a 12-month extension option, which Palace exercised in 2024. Mateta argued that the extra year should be voided, seeking free agent status in the summer of 2026. An independent tribunal under Premier League regulations heard the case last season, leaving the contract intact, while FIFA ruled earlier in the week that reviewing the validity of the contract clause falls outside its jurisdiction.
Transfer interest and failed winter move
The legal dispute follows repeated attempts by the striker to exit the south London club. In January 2026, Italian side Milan agreed to pay a fee of around £30m for Mateta, but the transfer collapsed when he failed a medical check due to a knee issue. The injury kept him out of action for two months before he returned to help Palace win the UEFA Conference League, adding to an FA Cup title won under former manager Oliver Glasner. Mateta, who has scored 67 goals for the club, received boos from sections of supporters following the transfer request. Palace rejected an inquiry from Aston Villa this week, with Villa exploring options as they weigh a potential sale of Ollie Watkins to Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal.

Managerial stance on player departures
Despite the ongoing contract conflict, Mateta started from the first minute in Palace's Premier League opener on Saturday, a 2-0 defeat against Everton. New Palace manager Pierre Sage also addressed broader transfer speculation surrounding winger Ismaïla Sarr, who was left out of the squad at Everton amid pursuit from Turkish side Galatasaray. Sage denied reports that the 28-year-old Senegal forward refused to travel to Merseyside, clarifying that he was sidelined by groin pain.
We took the decision before the session with the doctor, the player, and me, to let him get treatment and do an individual session, and he will be back on Monday with us. For the moment, we don't want him to leave. He is under contract with us with three years to go and he will be with us on Monday.
Palace are preparing for their first home match of the campaign against Manchester City on Friday night, with Sage seeking to keep his core squad together as the transfer window draws toward its close.
