Jorge Martin takes Austrian MotoGP pole by 0.015 seconds and wins sprint

Qualifying battle at the Red Bull Ring

Aprilia rider Jorge Martin secured pole position for the Austrian MotoGP Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg. The 28-year-old Spaniard, who won the 2024 world championship, posted a lap time of 1:27.917 in the closing minutes of the second qualifying session on Saturday. His lap edged Ducati rider Marc Marquez by 0.015 seconds, after the 33-year-old reigning champion clocked a time of 1:27.932 to take second place on the grid. KTM rider Pedro Acosta finished third, completing an all-Spanish front row at the Austrian manufacturer's home circuit. The result gave Martin his third pole position of the 2026 season.

Managing physical strain and track conditions

Martin entered the race weekend in Spielberg recovering from forearm compartment syndrome, also referred to as arm pump, which had troubled him during the San Marino Grand Prix a week earlier. Although he was seen repeatedly shaking his right arm to loosen muscular tension during the qualifying session, he maintained competitive speed across Q2. After initially tracking behind Marquez on the circuit, Martin chose to back off and run independently to avoid potential yellow flags and set a clean lap.

I was behind Marc at first. Even though I was fast, I couldn't ride the way I wanted to or brake strong. So I decided to go on my own and avoid the risk of yellow flags. I pushed like crazy. Everything was under control, but definitely on the limit, so I'm really happy.

Martin noted that bike adjustments overnight yielded significant improvements following Friday practice. He explained that strong pace in morning practice and qualifying left him feeling prepared for race conditions against Marquez and Acosta.

Championship battle and sprint race victory

Marquez had taken the lead of the world championship after winning a chaotic San Marino Grand Prix the previous weekend, entering Austria tied with Martin on 274 points. Marquez held the official championship lead on a tiebreak by virtue of winning more races during the 2026 season. Despite missing pole position by 15 thousandths of a second, Marquez expressed satisfaction with his front-row placement after experiencing setup difficulties during Friday time-attack runs.

Yesterday we were struggling a lot in the time attack, so today we improved. I knew it would be difficult to make the front row but we're here now, so I'm happy.

Marquez pointed to tire management as a critical factor for the weekend, noting the performance variance between new and used tires at Spielberg. Later on Saturday, Martin converted his front-row start into victory in the sprint race ahead of Marquez, reclaiming the lead in the world championship standings.

Starting grid and French riders

Behind the top three riders on the starting grid, Aprilia rider Marco Bezzecchi, who occupied third in the championship standings, qualified fourth. Ai Ogura placed fifth for Trackhouse Aprilia, while Alex Marquez qualified sixth for Gresini Ducati. Factory Ducati rider Francesco Bagnaia took seventh on the grid, followed by Fabio Di Giannantonio in eighth position. French rider Fabio Quartararo secured ninth place on his Yamaha after earning direct entry to Q2. Johann Zarco recovered from a crash during Friday practice on his Honda, progressing out of Q1 to take tenth on the grid ahead of Brad Binder in 11th and Fermin Aldeguer in 12th.
