Attack at Place du 4-Septembre
A 15-year-old student at Marseille's Lycée Colbert attacked a 40-year-old woman with an improvised aerosol flamethrower on Thursday, 1 October 2026. The victim, who works as a home care assistant, was waiting at a bus stop on Place du 4-Septembre near the school when a group of youths attempted to smash the shelter using a metal barrier. She intervened to dissuade the group from destroying the public furniture, urging them to demonstrate peacefully instead. While several individuals backed away, a masked teenager stepped forward and directed a spray can ignited by a lighter directly at her face. Video footage recorded at the scene showed flames engulfing her face and smoke rising from her hair as she shielded herself with her hands. The victim filed a formal complaint on Friday, sustaining facial burns without apparent permanent physical damage.
Arrest and judicial custody
The investigator unit for offences against persons within the Local Judicial Police Service identified and detained the teenager on Friday afternoon in another district of Marseille. Surveillance footage and social media videos aided officers in locating the student, who was enrolled in a personal care services curriculum at Lycée Colbert. The suspect had no prior police record and confessed immediately upon his arrest, expressing deep remorse to investigators after realizing the severity of the act. Custody was extended by 24 hours on Saturday before the case was formally transferred to judicial authorities on Sunday morning. Marseille Public Prosecutor Nicolas Bessone announced that the minor was charged with an act of barbarity and placed in pre-trial detention.
Following his indictment and the hearing before the liberties and detention judge, the minor, in accordance with the prosecution's requisitions, was placed in provisional detention at the Marseille juvenile prison facility.

Government reaction and planned mobilization
Material destruction across the country reached an estimated total exceeding 35 million euros, prompting approximately 500 schools to remain closed on Monday, 5 October 2026. The French government prepared legislation to hold parents financially liable for damages caused by minors during demonstrations. Minister of the Interior Laurent Nuñez defended the policing tactics deployed during the unrest, rejecting assertions that law enforcement responses were disproportionate.
The gendarmes intervene firmly and without delay to stop the violence and abuses committed by rioters, and all of this done with proportionality.
Additional violent incidents occurred in regional centers, including an assault in Belfort near the Swiss border that left a police officer hospitalized after losing consciousness. Police also detained a 16-year-old youth in La Ciotat along the Côte d'Azur in connection with unrest. Trade unions called for further coordinated protest marches across French cities on Tuesday.
