Riyad Mahrez retires from Algeria duty after World Cup round-of-32 exit against Switzerland
Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez announced his international retirement following a 2-0 defeat by Switzerland in the World Cup round of 32, closing a 12-year career with the Desert Foxes.
Match and announcement
Algeria's World Cup campaign ended in Vancouver with a 2-0 loss to Switzerland in the round of 32. Goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye sealed the defeat. Minutes after the final whistle, captain Riyad Mahrez confirmed he had played his last match for the national team.
It's my last appearance even with the national team. It was my last game.
The 35-year-old forward had already hinted at the decision during the tournament, but made it official in a pitch-side interview with beIN Sports.
Mahrez's words
Mahrez reflected on the match and his career. He said the team had chances but paid for defensive errors.
The goal was to progress, and I think it was a game that was within our reach. We conceded two goals on mistakes, and at this level, we pay dearly for that.
He also spoke about the honour of representing his country.
Representing Algeria has been a dream of mine ever since I was young, to play for my country. It's been an immense honour and a great source of pride. It is the new generation's turn to play.
As he left the pitch, Mahrez gave a thumbs-up, patted his heart and waved to the Algerian supporters.
International legacy
Mahrez retires with 119 international appearances (120 according to the BBC) and 40 goals, making him the second-most capped player and second-highest scorer in Algeria's history. Defender Aissa Mandi holds the caps record with 122, while Islam Slimani leads the scoring chart with 46 goals.
He made his debut in 2014 and went on to captain the side. The pinnacle of his international career came in 2019, when Algeria won the Africa Cup of Nations. At this World Cup, Mahrez scored a crucial brace against Austria in the group stage, turning a 1-2 deficit into a 3-2 lead and securing the point that kept Algeria in the tournament.
Club career
Mahrez will continue at club level with Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli, where he is under contract. He previously won five Premier League titles (one with Leicester City, four with Manchester City) and the 2023 Champions League with Manchester City.
What's next for Algeria
Switzerland advance to face the winner of Colombia versus Ghana. For Algeria, the focus shifts to rebuilding without their talisman, as Mahrez steps aside for a new generation.
