Qatar's Assim Madibo banned for 5 games after breaking the leg of Canada's Ismaël Koné at World Cup
FIFA has suspended Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo for five matches after his second-half tackle fractured the leg of Canada's Ismaël Koné, ending the Sassuolo player's World Cup and requiring surgery.
The tackle
Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo received a straight red card in the 51st minute of Canada's 6-0 World Cup group-stage victory over Qatar in Vancouver last Thursday. His challenge from behind left Canada midfielder Ismaël Koné with fractures to the tibia and fibula bones in his left leg. Players around him immediately feared a serious injury as he lay on the pitch, holding his leg. Referee Cristián Garay initially showed a yellow card before correcting it to a direct red after reviewing the incident.
- Canada 6-0 Qatar. Madibo sent off for tackle; Koné breaks leg.
- FIFA imposes five-match suspension on Madibo, effective immediately.
- Qatar face Bosnia; Canada play Switzerland in final group games.
Aftermath
Koné was taken off on a stretcher and underwent surgery shortly after the game. He will miss the remainder of the tournament. The 24-year-old Sassuolo player later posted on Instagram:
Madibo, visibly upset, apologised in person after the match and later visited Koné in hospital alongside Qatar's sports minister. The Qatar Football Association said the visit "reflects the spirit of sportsmanship and the strong relationships on and off the field."You can't even imagine how grateful I am to everyone who reached out and that has me in their prayers.
FIFA disciplinary action
The FIFA Disciplinary Committee imposed a five-match suspension on Madibo for serious foul play on Wednesday, effective immediately. The ban, which begins with Qatar's final group game against Bosnia and Herzegovina later that day, is subject to appeal to the FIFA Appeal Committee. It is among the most severe World Cup suspensions in recent memory, though less lengthy than the nine‑match ban handed to Uruguay's Luis Suarez for biting in 2014 and the eight‑match ban for Italy's Mauro Tassotti's elbow on Spain's Luis Enrique in 1994.
Group B outlook
Canada, co-hosts of the 2026 tournament, lead Group B and face Switzerland in their final group match on Wednesday, hoping to qualify as group winners. Qatar must beat Bosnia and Herzegovina to have any chance of progressing. Koné's absence forces Canada coach John Herdman to reorganise the midfield, while Qatar are without the experienced Madibo for their decisive fixture.
