Rod Stewart, Cyndi Lauper, and Xutos & Pontapés lead Rock in Rio Lisboa's 'Day of Legends'
The first day of Rock in Rio Lisboa's second weekend brings together Rod Stewart, Cyndi Lauper, and 4 Non Blondes, drawing fans from across Portugal and beyond.
A day dedicated to legends
Saturday's lineup at Parque Tejo turned the festival into a multi-generational celebration. Billed as the 'Day of Legends', the main stage featured Rod Stewart, Cyndi Lauper, 4 Non Blondes, The Wailers, Shaggy, and Portuguese stalwarts Xutos & Pontapés. Gates opened at 13:00, with fans already queuing to secure a spot near the front for the evening's headline acts. Organisers promised a mix of nostalgia and energy that would appeal to those who grew up with these artists and to younger audiences discovering them for the first time.
Fans travel from across the country and beyond
Dedicated followers made long journeys for a single performance. Luís Henrique and Tiago, a couple from Brazil, built their holiday around Cyndi Lauper's farewell tour. "When she sings Time After Time, everyone will cry," Luís said. Six friends from Torres Novas, most in their 60s and attending a festival for the first time, drove specifically to see 4 Non Blondes. "I waited many years for this. They marked my adolescence," one of them, Marisa Santos, explained. A group of teachers from Bragança, Vieira de Leiria, and Fátima combined their trip to catch Rod Stewart, Cyndi Lauper, and a band that holds a special place: Xutos & Pontapés. "My first concert was Xutos. I was 12. Today I came back to see them again," one recalled.
Rod Stewart promises dynamic performance despite recent health scare
The British singer arrived at Rock in Rio after a difficult fortnight. During a US concert last week he received oxygen on stage and finished the set seated. An earlier show had been cancelled because of laryngitis. Speaking to SIC, he described performing as a "wonderful" job and said he was far from retirement. Fans at Parque Tejo who had followed his career since adolescence said they were eager to hear the hits that soundtracked their youth. The show is very sensuous, very dynamic, very lively with all the songs you want to hear.
Portuguese rock history takes centre stage
A separate stage curated by Tim of Xutos & Pontapés gathered four pillars of Portuguese rock for the first time on the same day: Jafumega, UHF, GNR, and the curators themselves. The Porto band Jafumega opened early, drawing longtime followers to the area beside the Tejo. UHF followed, and later GNR and Xutos & Pontapés were set to perform. Xutos, formed in 1979, remain the only act to have played every edition of Rock in Rio Lisboa since its 2004 debut. This year they returned both as performers and as the first band to programme an entire side stage.
The Flight: a daily air spectacle
At 20:00 each day five aircraft from the Alverca airbase of the Portuguese Air Force execute a 15-minute synchronised display over the festival grounds. The planes fly as close as two metres apart in a routine rehearsed over a year. "The Flight" was designed to add a visual punctuation to each festival day, with the aircraft banking above the Tagus before returning to base.
