Lisbon airport handling workers arrested with 110 kilograms of cocaine

Portugal's criminal investigation agency, the Polícia Judiciária, arrested two ground handling employees at Humberto Delgado Airport in Lisbon on Friday, 11 September 2026. The targeted action, designated Operation Falcon, was planned and executed by the National Unit for Combating Drug Trafficking. Both suspects are Portuguese nationals, aged 46 and 48, who were employed by ground handling contractor companies operating at the Lisbon facility. These handling companies are responsible for transporting checked passenger baggage from airplane cargo holds to airport conveyor belts. Investigators placed both workers under observation after detecting evidence connecting airport logistics staff to an organized drug syndicate. Officers detained both men in Lisbon while executing search and arrest measures on Friday.

Smuggling mechanism inside the terminal

Evidence collected by the anti-narcotics unit revealed the specific methods used by the ground handling employees to bypass airport security. The two workers used their operational duties to access the cargo holds of commercial passenger aircraft arriving in Portugal from South America. Upon unloading the aircraft holds, the handlers located suitcases containing cocaine and removed them before the luggage could be placed on conveyor belts leading to airport baggage claim areas. The workers then moved the suitcases through restricted airport areas and carried them to the exterior of the airport. Once outside the terminal grounds, the packages were delivered to awaiting associates within the criminal organization.

Confiscated drugs and cash

During the Operation Falcon intervention on Friday, officers intercepted the two suspects and confiscated approximately 110 kilograms of cocaine from their possession. In addition to the narcotics haul, police units seized approximately 200,000 euros in cash from the two men. Law enforcement authorities also confiscated several motor vehicles, along with a collection of objects and documents deemed to possess evidentiary value for the investigation. All physical assets, vehicles, and documentation were catalogued as material evidence to assist in tracing financial flows and mapping out communications between the handlers and external trafficking operatives.

Judicial proceedings in Lisbon

Following their arrest on Friday, the two men remained in police custody until Saturday, 12 September 2026, when they were escorted to a Lisbon court for their initial judicial interrogation. The hearing before the competent judicial authority was held to determine formal coercive measures and pretrial custody arrangements. The criminal inquiry is led by the Lisbon Department of Investigation and Penal Action (DIAP), the prosecutorial body overseeing serious illicit trafficking offenses. Investigators and prosecutors continue to examine seized records and logistical schedules to uncover any further connections involving commercial transatlantic flights and ground personnel.
