Outbreak and rapid containment in Thanos
A wildfire broke out at approximately 14:30 on Friday, 21 August 2026, in an area of low vegetation near Thanos in southern Lemnos. Emergency crews were dispatched immediately to contain the spread across the dry brushland. Within hours of ignition, firefighting units established control over the perimeter and halted the advancement of the flames. At 18:10 on Friday, the Hellenic Fire Service officially announced that no active fire front remained in the area. Firefighter injured during ground operations
A firefighter operating on the ground sustained an injury while battling the blaze in the Thanos area. The incident occurred during suppression operations when the responder accidentally fell into an uncovered well. Emergency personnel recovered the firefighter from the well and transferred him directly to the Emergency Department of Lemnos Hospital for immediate diagnostic care. Michalis Giannakos, president of the Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Employees (POEDIN), stated that the firefighter underwent required clinical examinations and that initial medical evaluations indicated a minor injury to the pelvis. Medical staff at the hospital kept the firefighter under observation to monitor his condition following the fall.
Deployment of ground and aerial resources
The containment response mobilized resources from both local and regional emergency agencies. Ground operations included 33 firefighters operating 12 fire engines alongside two specialized walking ground teams. These ground forces combined personnel from the Lemnos Fire Service and the 7th Special Forestry Operations Unit, known as the 7th EMODE. Aerial units carried out concentrated water drops to support the ground crews, deploying six fixed-wing firefighting airplanes and one helicopter over the burning brush. The Municipality of Lemnos assisted the operational effort by supplying water tankers to maintain continuous water delivery to the frontline fire engines. The combination of targeted aerial drops and coordinated ground suppression allowed crews to neutralize the active front in less than four hours.
