TV Chef Johann Lafer Reveals Lymph Node Cancer Battle: 'Dying Is Not an Option'
Celebrity chef Johann Lafer, 68, has publicly disclosed his diagnosis with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a form of lymph node cancer, and his ongoing chemotherapy treatment that began in January 2026.
A Shocking Diagnosis Made Public
Celebrity chef Johann Lafer has revealed he is battling lymph node cancer. In an interview with the German newspaper "Bild", the 68-year-old Austrian-born TV personality stated, "I am sick. Seriously sick. I have lymph node cancer." The disease was first detected approximately two and a half years ago during a routine check-up while he was on a fasting cure. A doctor noticed shadows in his groin area, though Lafer felt no pain at the time. The diagnosis was later confirmed as an indolent, low-malignancy, non-aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
I initially hoped that everything would just disappear. You think: that doesn't affect me. It will go away.
A Drastic Turn in Early 2026
Lafer's condition deteriorated significantly in January 2026. He described the sudden onset of severe symptoms, including swelling and night sweats that made sleep nearly impossible. "Suddenly everything was swollen. The night sweats. I could barely sleep. That's when I realized: something is going completely in the wrong direction," Lafer recounted. Doctors found that numerous lymph nodes throughout his body were affected, a moment that brought the gravity of his illness into sharp focus. Since the beginning of the year, he has been fighting the cancer with an intensive chemotherapy regimen.
Every chemo session runs for almost 24 hours. Bottles are hanging everywhere. It completely knocks you out.
The Toll of Treatment and Signs of Hope
Lafer has completed four cycles of chemotherapy so far. The treatment has come with severe side effects, including hair loss, a weakened immune system, and a weight loss of 25 kilograms. He also temporarily lost his sense of taste, which he described as losing his "core competency." Despite these challenges, Lafer delivered positive news, stating that the treatment is working. "You can see that the nodes are getting smaller. That the treatment is taking effect. And that gives me strength," he said. He recently received new CT scan results from his doctors, which he called "good news" indicating that things are improving.
Dying is not an option for me. I want to work, I have to work. I need that. I still have so much planned and so many ideas.
Family, Faith, and New Priorities
For a long time, only Lafer's wife Silvia knew about the serious illness. The couple made a conscious decision to keep the diagnosis from their children, Jennifer (31) and Jonathan (25), who only learned of their father's condition about two months before he went public. "We wanted to keep it a secret for as long as possible. They came immediately. They were incredibly strong. Very helpful," Lafer said. He also draws strength from his Catholic faith, stating that prayer is very important to him. The experience has led him to set new priorities, focusing on traveling and enjoying life more consciously. He finds new courage in small, everyday moments of appreciation from fans.
We are guests on Earth. It is finite. There will be nothing that frees us from it. I just hope that I may remain a guest for as long as possible.
An Outpouring of Support
Following his public announcement, which was also shared on Instagram, many prominent colleagues and celebrities expressed their shock and sent personal wishes for his recovery on social media. Lafer stated that, under the circumstances, he is doing well and is especially pleased to be able to continue his work and attend many planned appointments and appearances. He recently surprised viewers on the ZDF "Fernsehgarten" show with a new look, appearing without his signature mustache and wearing a bandana, a change that sparked much online discussion before his diagnosis was made public.
