Zelensky dismisses Ukraine's ambassador to the US amid government reshuffle

The dismissal

On Monday, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree removing Olha Stefanisjyna as Ukraine's ambassador to the United States. The move had been expected since mid-July, when Zelensky launched a broad reshuffle of his government and key diplomatic posts. Stefanisjyna, who had held the Washington post for just over a year, said she herself requested the dismissal. "I asked to be relieved of my duties," she wrote on Facebook, citing personal circumstances. Ukrainian media reported that the National Anti-Corruption Bureau is conducting an investigation into Stefanisjyna over alleged corruption, though no formal charges have been filed.

Stefanisjyna's tenure

Stefanisjyna was appointed ambassador in July 2025, after serving as deputy prime minister and justice minister. During her time in Washington, she worked to secure continued US military aid and intelligence sharing, which are vital for Ukraine's war effort against Russia. The ambassador's post in the US is considered one of the most critical for Kyiv, given the country's reliance on American Patriot air defense systems and other weaponry. Stefanisjyna and former prime minister Yulia Svyrydenko, who was reportedly offered the ambassador role but declined, had both managed to maintain a good working relationship with the Trump administration despite shifting US policy.

Broader government overhaul

The dismissal is part of a wider shake-up that Zelensky initiated in July. He said at the time that he wanted to assign key foreign policy dossiers to officials with specific experience. The reshuffle has already seen the replacement of the army chief, the defense minister, and the prime minister, along with several cabinet ministers. Those changes sparked protests among Ukrainians. On Monday, Ukrainian media also reported that former defense minister Rustem Umerov will take over the foreign security service. Umerov currently serves as secretary of the National Security and Defense Council; he will be succeeded by the interior minister.

US-Ukraine relations and Patriot missiles

The ambassador change comes at a delicate moment in US-Ukraine ties. Relations between Zelensky and President Donald Trump have been strained, though Trump recently showed a more favorable stance. He announced that the US would give Ukraine "the right to produce Patriots," a crucial system for defending cities and infrastructure against ballistic missiles. Shortly afterward, however, Trump walked back the pledge, leaving the future of the Patriot license uncertain. The back-and-forth underscores the unpredictable nature of the bilateral relationship, which the new ambassador will have to navigate.
