Nine killed as Russian ballistic missiles slam into Kyiv; earlier air assault kills 8, missile falls in Poland
At least nine people killed and up to 28 injured in Saturday morning strike on the Ukrainian capital; follows a massive missile-and-drone assault and a Polish airspace incursion.
Russian ballistic missile strike on Kyiv
Russian ballistic missiles struck Kyiv in the early hours of Saturday, killing at least nine people and injuring between 23 and 28, according to Ukrainian emergency services and mayor Vitali Klitschko. Four of the wounded are children. The attack triggered fires across five districts of the capital, including Solomianskyi, Darnytskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, Dniprovskyi and Pecherskyi. In the Darnytskyi district, seven people died and 14 were hurt, while in Solomianskyi two were killed and eight injured. A five-storey residential building sustained serious damage, with the first and second floors partially collapsing, and several warehouses caught fire. Residents also faced power outages as the strikes knocked out electricity in multiple areas.
Earlier massive air assault
Two days earlier, on the night of 29–30 July, Russia launched a sweeping aerial operation across western and central Ukraine, the Kyiv region and the capital itself. The attack involved 70 missiles and more than 280 drones. At least eight people died, including two children. In Lviv, one person was killed and over 30 were wounded. The assault marked the second major strike on Kyiv in a single week and underscored the intensification of Russian air campaigns in recent months.
Polish airspace violation
On Thursday morning, an armed Russian Kh-101 cruise missile violated Polish airspace and came down near the village of Tarnawa-Kolonia in the Lublin province, roughly 100 kilometres from the Ukrainian border. The incident was directly linked to the preceding night’s large-scale barrage and heightened tensions along NATO’s eastern flank.

Air defence gaps
Ukraine has been struggling with a chronic shortage of air defence systems capable of intercepting ballistic missiles, which travel at speeds many times faster than sound. This vulnerability has allowed Russian forces to inflict increasingly severe damage on urban centres. The repeated use of high-speed weapons, combined with large drone swarms, continues to strain Ukraine’s defensive capabilities.

Rising toll and frequency
The latest casualty figures from Saturday morning climbed through the day: initial reports from city authorities had spoken of four dead and 13 injured before the number rose to nine dead and 23–28 wounded. The intensification of attacks comes after weeks of mounting Russian aerial pressure. The cumulative toll since the Wednesday–Thursday assault stands at 17 dead and scores wounded across multiple Ukrainian regions, with a foreign airspace breach adding a cross-border dimension to the crisis.
