Washington widens Iran campaign as Kyiv reshuffles and smoky cities confront heat

The day’s main stories share a hard edge: governments are taking bigger risks and asking citizens to trust them. War widened in the Gulf, Ukraine changed hands at the top of its defence ministry, and smoke turned North American summer into a public-health warning.

Maro Kontou's funeral set for Friday at Athens' First Cemetery, eulogy by Parliament President

The beloved Greek actress, who died at 92, will be laid to rest on July 17. Her close friend Nikitas Kaklamanis will speak, and the family asks for donations to a children's charity.

Funeral arrangements

The funeral of Maro Kontou will take place on Friday, July 17, at 11:00 AM at the First Cemetery of Athens. Her body will lie at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens from 11 AM, followed by the burial. The President of the Hellenic Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis, a close friend, will deliver the eulogy. Relatives, friends, colleagues, and political figures are expected to attend.

A final wish

Kontou had shared a personal request with Kaklamanis. She asked that when their group of friends next gathers for a meal or a game of biriba, they leave a cigarette and a glass of whiskey on her empty chair.

The next time our group meets for food or biriba, leave a cigarette and a glass of whiskey on my empty chair.

— Maro Kontou

Family's request

Instead of wreaths, the family asks for donations to the "Mitera" infant center, where Kontou served as president. The request was shared via a fan page on social media.

A life in the arts

Born on the island of Psara, Kontou graduated from the 3rd Girls' Gymnasium Makrygianni and completed dance studies at what is now the State School of Dance, earning a scholarship to the HLADEK school in Germany. She also earned a degree from the Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies of the University of Athens. Over a career spanning more than 35 years, she appeared in 61 feature films and 90 theatrical productions. She made her professional debut in 1954 with the National Theatre's Ancient Tragedy dance ensemble and stayed until 1958. Her stage acting debut came in 1959 alongside Dimitris Horn in Jacques Deval's "Romancero". In 1990 she hosted the television show "Choris Parexigisi" on ET2. She was also a painter, holding an exhibition at the Antinor gallery in 1993, with one of her works displayed at the Vorres Museum.

Health decline

In her final weeks, Kontou's health deteriorated significantly after an accident at home led to hospitalization. She died in the early hours of Wednesday, July 15, at the age of 92, following a stay at the "Agios Savvas" hospital.
