Knicks owner cancels Game 4 watch party, blames mayor and NYPD for 'police state' security around Madison Square Garden
James Dolan scrapped the outdoor fan event hours before tipoff, accusing Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch of strangling celebrations with a restrictive security perimeter.
The cancelled party
A planned watch party outside Madison Square Garden for Game 4 of the NBA Finals was abruptly cancelled on Wednesday, hours before the New York Knicks faced the San Antonio Spurs. Knicks owner James Dolan blamed Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, accusing them of imposing a security zone that would limit attendance to roughly 1,000 ticketed fans while keeping thousands more away. Dolan said the city's approval was "disingenuous at best" and that he refused to erect screens for an event that would exclude the vast majority of supporters.
He gave us the gift of allowing us to screen 999 people and tell 20,000, 'No.'
Security and the Trump factor
The restricted perimeter around the Garden was first erected for Monday's Game 3, which was attended by U.S. President Donald Trump. That deployment included a steel fence, limited access points, and Secret Service coordination. MSG Sports argued that maintaining the same zone for Game 4 proved the president's visit was "a convenient excuse to restrict how and when Knicks fans celebrate." The NYPD countered that Commissioner Tisch had been clear the perimeter would return for "safety purposes," and a department spokeswoman noted the city had approved the watch-party permit ahead of time.
The Knicks' victories are for all New Yorkers. We wish everyone could see the games live. Watch parties and public celebrations are a way for every Knicks fan to enjoy this special time.
Bryant Park disorder
Monday's alternative watch party in Bryant Park, about 10 blocks from the arena, drew an estimated crowd of 7,000 and descended into chaos after the Knicks lost. More than 20 people were taken into custody, eight were arrested, and five NYPD officers were injured. Video footage showed individuals wearing Spurs apparel being chased and attacked; one clip depicted a fan's Victor Wembanyama jersey being ripped apart. Two people were charged with assaulting an officer.
Political friction
Tensions between Mamdani, a self-described Knicks fan, and Tisch have surfaced repeatedly during the series. The mayor addressed MSG's complaints at a news conference, saying the Garden had applied for a gathering of 500 to 1,000 people and was approved for the maximum. He described the security measures as similar to those used for July 4 or New Year's Eve events. Dolan, speaking on "The Craig Carton Show," accused both officials of being inexperienced and intent on disrupting the team's playoff run.
But if there's one thing Knicks fans don't need permission for, it's showing up for our team wherever we may be -- no matter the block or the borough.
The series context
The Knicks entered Game 4 leading the best-of-seven series 2-1, competing in their first NBA Finals home games in 27 years. The matchup has captivated New York, with ticket prices reaching some of the highest levels in recent memory at the self-styled "World's Most Famous Arena." The New York Post reported that Taylor Swift would be among the celebrities in attendance. Game 5 is set for Saturday in San Antonio, with a potential Game 6 back in New York.
