Kieler Woche 2026 attracts three million visitors, police report fewer crimes despite summer heat
The nine-day sailing regatta and folk festival in Kiel drew around 3 million guests, down from 3.3 million in 2025. Authorities described the atmosphere as peaceful and considerate even as temperatures soared, with criminal offences falling 21% year on year.
Attendance and atmosphere
Around three million people visited Kieler Woche 2026, a slight drop from the 3.3 million recorded in 2025, according to city officials. The festival ran from 20 June to 28 June, combining a world-class sailing regatta with stages, public viewing of Germany’s World Cup matches, and the traditional Open Ship event. Lord Mayor Samet Yilamz (Greens) said the large international turnout showed how many wanted to connect.
Whether on water or on land, in front of the stages or in the town hall, during public viewing or at Open Ship: I am totally pleased that so many people from all over the world felt like connecting with each other.
Kieler-Woche organiser Philipp Dornberger called the heat a real challenge but praised the crowd’s behaviour.
People from Kiel, from the region and from many countries celebrated together – peacefully, happily and with a lot of consideration for each other.
Security and crime statistics
Police maintained a visible presence throughout the event. Kiel police chief Mathias Engelmann reported 283 criminal offences up to Sunday morning, compared with 356 in 2025. Violent crimes fell from 126 to 107. Nine sexual offences were recorded, mostly in the area of sexual harassment, but no assault-type sexual offence occurred. Officers issued 90 expulsion orders and placed 10 people in custody.

During 350 checks for dangerous items four knives were found, and more than 260 vehicles were controlled. Fourteen e-scooter riders were intoxicated or under the influence of drugs; one had a blood-alcohol level of almost 2.0 per mille. A car driver registered 2.8 per mille and a cyclist 2.5 per mille. Federal police reported 27 knife violations and, despite a nationwide train outage on 23 June during the return-travel period, no disturbances.
There were no tumults or anything similar.
Weather and emergency response
The event coincided with a spell of high-summer heat, especially on the weekends. Organisers had set up additional shaded areas and cooling stations, which were well received. Rescue services transported 166 people to hospital and provided more than 1,400 instances of assistance of varying severity.
Sailing regatta in light winds
As one of the world’s largest sailing events, Kieler Woche hosted almost 4,000 sailors from 51 nations competing in 21 boat classes. A persistent high-pressure system brought light winds, meaning challenging conditions predominantly at the lower wind limit. Not all planned races could be started.
The mood was very positive, despite the light-wind week.
Highlights included the Olympic-class contests and the Flying Dutchman world championship. Kiel also used the regatta to showcase itself as a potential future host of Olympic sailing competitions after Germany’s successful Olympic bid.
Opening and closing ceremonies
Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier opened the event for the second time, after 2018. On 20 June he gave the traditional ship-horn signal “Leinen los”. The city was already busy the day before, during the so-called Soundcheck. The festival was due to conclude on the evening of 28 June with a high-altitude fireworks display over the Kiel Fjord, accompanied by a laser and drone show and synchronised music.
