Kerry survive Tyrone fightback as Heinrich's buzzer-beater goal settles All-Ireland quarter-final
Defending All-Ireland champions Kerry survived a ferocious Tyrone comeback to reach the semi-finals, with Armin Heinrich's goal on the final play securing a narrow win.
Half-time platform
Kerry built a two-point advantage by the interval, leading 1-11 to 0-12. David Clifford's goal was the difference, and the champions appeared to be pulling away when they opened the second period with five unanswered points inside 10 minutes. Dylan Geaney and Clifford both landed two-pointers to stretch the margin to five.
McCurry sparks a revival
Tyrone manager Malachy O'Rourke summoned Darren McCurry from the bench at half-time, and the substitute made an immediate impact by nailing a difficult two-point free. McCurry would go on to score 10 points in the half, hauling his side back into contention. Goalkeeper Shane Murphy had to narrow the angle smartly to deny a goal attempt from Ronan Cassidy, and Eoin McElholm's rasping drive came back off the crossbar as the Ulster men refused to yield.
Kerry's scoring response
Dylan Geaney delivered a composed three-score burst, including his second two-pointer of the day, to keep Kerry noses in front. David Clifford and McCurry then engaged in a personal duel on the scoreboard, the Kerry marksman eventually totalling 1-7. Paudie Clifford's disputed 45' – which Tyrone players felt should have been a wide – gave the champions precious breathing space.
Final exchanges
McCurry's eighth and ninth points left only one between the teams with three minutes to play, and a free from the same player cancelled out Paudie Clifford's effort heading into the final play. Kerry retained their own kick-out and worked the ball to substitute Armin Heinrich, who dribbled it past the goalkeeper on the hooter to send the 48,735 crowd into relief and seal a semi-final berth.
