
Teenager stabbed to death in Kallithea street brawl; one suspect arrested, 14 detained
A 17-year-old died after being stabbed in the chest during a fight involving about ten people on Megaloupoleos street in Kallithea, Athens, late Wednesday night. Police have detained 14 individuals and arrested one suspect, while the motive is suspected to be football fan rivalry.
The attack
A group of around ten people clashed on Megaloupoleos street in Kallithea just before midnight on Wednesday, 24 June. During the brawl, one person stabbed a young male in the chest with a knife. The victim, described by witnesses as aged between 16 and 18, collapsed on the road.
It was a kid there, maybe 16 years old or so, he's young.
Emergency response
An EKAB ambulance arrived at the scene and transported the teenager in critical condition to Ippokrateio Hospital. Despite doctors' efforts, he succumbed to his injuries a short time later. A neighbour who tried to help said the ambulance took more than half an hour to arrive, while police reached the scene quickly.
We saw him on the street covered in blood, you understand. We tried to help him, but... For about 5-10 minutes we tried to help him, but then he lost consciousness.
Investigation and arrests
Police launched extensive searches in the area, detaining 14 people for questioning. One of those detained was subsequently arrested as the suspected perpetrator. Officers also recovered a knife believed to have been used in the attack; it has been sent to forensic laboratories for examination. Authorities are collecting witness statements and security camera footage.

Possible fan motive
Investigators are treating football hooliganism as the primary line of inquiry. Christos Syndrevelis, president of the Panhellenic Federation of Police Employees (POASY), told Mega channel that the incident likely stemmed from fan rivalries. Witnesses also told reporters they believed the brawl was linked to organised supporter groups.
The incident is being examined as a fan-motivated attack.
Witness accounts
Residents reported hearing a short but intense argument followed by screams. One neighbour, who was returning home with her husband and baby, saw a group of men running away before discovering the bloodied victim. She described trying to assist the teenager for several minutes until he lost consciousness.
