Italy bans Juventus and Torino away fans for 10 matches after Turin derby violence
Italy's Interior Ministry has barred Juventus and Torino supporters from attending away fixtures for the first 10 matchdays of the 2026/2027 Serie A season, following violent clashes before the May 24 derby that left one fan with a serious head injury.
The ban
Italy's Interior Ministry (Viminale) has imposed a sweeping away-match ban on supporters of Juventus and Torino, effective until 3 November 2026. The measure covers the first 10 matchdays of the 2026/2027 Serie A season and mandates the closure of away sections at stadiums where the two Turin clubs play on the road. Ticket sales for those fixtures are also prohibited for residents of the affected regions. For Torino, the ban applies to fans residing in Piedmont; for Juventus, it extends to residents of both Piedmont and Lombardy. Individual prefects in the provinces hosting the matches will enforce the restrictions, and it remains unclear whether the ban will also apply to summer friendlies.
What happened on 24 May
The derby on the final day of the 2025/2026 season was one of five matches scheduled to kick off at 20:45 local time because of their importance in deciding the last two of Serie A's four Champions League places. Violent clashes between the two sets of ultras broke out in the afternoon outside the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino. The disorder caused a heavy delay; the match eventually kicked off at 21:51, more than an hour late. Juventus fans, the away supporters that evening, demanded the game be suspended and called over club captain Manuel Locatelli to relay their demands. They later abandoned the away end during the 2-2 draw. Juventus finished the season sixth and will play in the Europa League next term.
The injured fan
Marco Leonardo Basoccu, a 36-year-old accountant and lifelong Juventus supporter, sustained a serious head injury during the pre-match violence. He was admitted to Turin's Molinette hospital in critical condition and underwent surgery. On 9 June, after more than two weeks of treatment, Basoccu was discharged. He told reporters he has little memory of the events. "I remember a little bit of what happened before. I still need to understand the real events that took place, I still need to speak to the people who were with me, I haven't spoken to all of them yet, but I don't have a very clear memory of what happened," he said. Basoccu added that his recovery is not complete and another operation is planned.
The only thing I need is rest and the serenity of the people who care about me and have always stood by me.
The investigation
Investigators from the Turin police's mobile squad are still working to determine what struck Basoccu — whether a tear gas canister or a stone — and who was responsible. They have analysed dozens of surveillance videos and drone footage from the Digos, while the prosecutor's office has commissioned technical analyses from ballistics experts and a forensic pathologist. Juventus fans have accused police of firing tear gas canisters directly at supporters and suggested that was what hit Basoccu. Basoccu himself has declined to comment on the public-order controversy, stating he does not know the facts.
Previous restrictions and affected fixtures
Torino's hardcore supporters were already subject to restrictive measures during the 2025/2026 season after incidents at the Torino-Verona match on 11 April, which led to away bans for trips to Cremona and Udine. Under the new ban, Juventus fans will miss away matches against Frosinone, Sassuolo, Cagliari and Genoa. Torino fans will be barred from travelling to Sassuolo, Fiorentina, Bologna, Parma and Frosinone.
