'Jump, grandma, I'll catch you': Delivery driver saves 75-year-old from fire in Kallithea balcony leap
A 75-year-old woman escaped a blazing house in Kallithea on Sunday by jumping from a first-floor balcony into the arms of passersby, led by a delivery driver who urged her to leap.
Fire breaks out in Kallithea home
A fire erupted around 16:18 on Sunday (28 June) on the ground floor of a two-storey house at the intersection of Aristeidou and Agion Panton streets in Kallithea, a southern suburb of Athens. The flames spread rapidly through the detached home where an elderly couple, an 80-year-old man and a 75-year-old woman, were resting at the time. The house was completely destroyed, and the blaze threatened adjacent buildings before a force of 24 firefighters with seven vehicles and a special snorkel truck brought it under partial control.
The husband managed to escape through a rear garage door. The wife initially hesitated to leave and called for help, but as the fire shattered windows and engulfed the interior she became trapped on the balcony with no way out.
Woman trapped on balcony as flames close in
Footage from the scene shows the 75-year-old on the balcony, screaming for help while flames and smoke poured out behind her. Neighbours described the woman shouting 'I'm burning, help!' as thick black smoke billowed. With the fire advancing and no ladder immediately available, the only escape route was a jump of about five metres.
Passersby form a human safety net
Around 15 to 20 people gathered below, among them police officers and a delivery driver, Aga Kechagia, who had abandoned his motorbike when he saw the smoke. He called up to the terrified woman, coaxing her to jump.
She was screaming for help, the house was burning. She was howling. The fire was above her, she would have burned. 'Jump, grandma,' I told her, 'I'll catch you.' 'Are you sure? Will you catch me?' she said. 'Jump, jump, don't worry,' I told her. She jumped and we caught her, we all fell down. We caught her, we saved a human life. The grandma was a little hurt, but she is okay.
The group managed to break her fall, and she survived with only minor burns to her arm, singed hair, and respiratory irritation. She was taken to the Erythros Stavros hospital.
Injuries and emergency response
The 80-year-old husband, who had exited through the garage, suffered a leg injury and was also transported to hospital. A citizen who helped catch the woman sustained a fracture (initial reports described either a leg or arm injury). During the firefighting operation two volunteer firefighters were lightly hurt, one with facial burns and the other treated with oxygen for smoke inhalation. The fire was declared under control shortly before 19:00, though crews remained on site for overhaul. The couple's son arrived during the emergency, clutching the family dog, and broke down in tears; his sister was also overcome with shock upon hearing what had happened.
Aftermath and investigation
An arson investigation unit from Attica arrived at the scene to determine the cause of the blaze. Neighbours described the complete destruction of the property but expressed relief that no lives were lost.
