Jay-Z Yankee Stadium finale delayed three hours after hundreds without tickets rush gates
The third and final night of Jay-Z's anniversary residency in the Bronx was pushed past midnight on Sunday after security closed entrances when ticketless fans tried to force their way inside, leaving hundreds of valid ticket-holders stranded outside.
Security breach and stadium lockdown
Jay-Z's concert at Yankee Stadium on Sunday night, the finale of a three-show residency, was delayed by roughly three hours after hundreds of people without tickets attempted to enter the venue. A representative for promoter Live Nation told AFP that "hundreds of people" without tickets arrived at the stadium, forcing security to close all entrances "for an extended period." Gates were then reopened "gradually and with the utmost caution" to guarantee the safety of everyone inside and outside the stadium. AFP observed hundreds of ticket-holders waiting for hours, and some later wrote on social media that they were never admitted.
Videos posted online captured the breach. Footage shared by users on X showed several young concertgoers breaching a turnstile as a bottleneck formed, with individuals becoming stuck in the entryway while a surging crowd pushed from behind. Security and New York Police Department officers rushed to the entrance to stop a potential stampede. A spokesperson for the NYPD said there was no information about any arrests at the stadium in connection with the concert. No injuries have been reported.
The delay and Jay-Z's response
Jay-Z did not appear on stage until approximately 0:15 or 0:45 local time, well after the scheduled start. Addressing the sold-out crowd of around 40,000 people inside the 46,000-seat venue, he apologized and explained the situation. Billboard reported his words to the audience.
It was like 10,000 people outside, and they closed all the doors -- because somebody rushed the doors -- for you guys' safety and for everybody's safety outside. There's 10,000 people outside; I didn't want to start music and get people trampled. I'm really sorry for the inconvenience, but I had to make sure everybody's okay. I appreciate y'all patience.
Despite the chaotic start, the crowd belted out hits with gusto once the performance began, and the show wrapped at 2:45 a.m. Monday.
Three nights of anniversaries and guests
The Yankee Stadium residency, held on July 10, 11, and 12, 2026, celebrated two landmark albums: the 30th anniversary of Jay-Z's 1996 debut Reasonable Doubt and the 25th anniversary of 2001's The Blueprint. The third night was structured as an overarching career retrospective, which Billboard reported featured a setlist of more than 40 tracks. Across all three shows, 19 special guests joined the Brooklyn rapper on stage.
Only a select few number of hip-hop artists could create sufficient demand to sell out a venue as large and iconic as Yankee Stadium. Even fewer could do so with music they released decades prior.
A-list appearances across the run
Beyonce performed the chorus of "Can't Knock the Hustle" on the first night and returned on the third to perform her own hit "Drunk in Love." Rihanna, Usher, Fat Joe and Jadakiss, Pharrell Williams, Clipse, Alicia Keys, Eminem, and Nas also appeared across the three evenings. On the final night, Teyana Taylor performed Mary J. Blige's part on "Can't Knock the Hustle" and later reflected on Instagram that "gratitude was louder than any mic could ever be," thanking Jay-Z for inviting her to take part.
After New York
The three concerts drew a combined audience of approximately 140,000 people, and Saturday's show broke the Yankee Stadium attendance record. Following the New York run, Jay-Z is scheduled to perform in September at the Stade de France in Paris (a date not yet sold out, according to France 24) and in London, before heading to the West Coast for an October 23 show at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
