Ivory Coast snatches late 1-0 win over Ecuador after three woodwork blows at World Cup
Amad Diallo's 91st-minute strike earned Ivory Coast a 1-0 victory over Ecuador in their opening Group E match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ending the South Americans' 19-game unbeaten run.
Pre-match expectations
Ecuador arrived in Philadelphia unbeaten in 19 matches, a streak underpinned by a defence that conceded only five goals in 18 qualifiers. Centre-backs Willian Pacho and Piero Hincapié, screened by Chelsea midfielder Moisés Caicedo, formed a formidable backbone. Ivory Coast, back at the World Cup after a 12-year absence, carried the weight of a golden generation that never progressed beyond the group stage in 2006, 2010 or 2014. Coach Emerse Faé deployed an attacking eleven featuring Yan Diomandé, Nicolas Pépé, Elye Wahi and Bazoumana Touré, intent on breaking the cycle.
Ecuador dominate, hit the frame twice
Ecuador started the brighter and created the clearer chances. John Yeboah, once of Dutch clubs VVV‑Venlo and Willem II, unleashed a long-range drive that crashed against the crossbar. Moments later, Alan Minda bent a shot that also cannoned off the bar. Enner Valencia, who scored against the Netherlands in Qatar, miscued an effort over as the sides went to the interval deadlocked. Ivory Coast had already collected three yellow cards and were grateful to goalkeeper Yahia Fofana for keeping the scoreline blank.
Second-half surge and more woodwork
Within seconds of the restart, Valencia's low cross from the byline clipped the post via a deflection off a defender. Ivory Coast began to assert themselves, with Diomandé shifting to his preferred left flank. Wahi rose to head against the crossbar from Diomandé's centre and later fired wide after a solo run. The pressure built, but Ecuador's rearguard held firm, seemingly steering the contest towards a goalless draw.
Diallo breaks Ecuador's resistance
Deep into seven minutes of added time, right-back Singo powered down the right and drove a low cross that substitute Amad Diallo met with a composed first-time finish at the far post. It was Ivory Coast's only shot on target to find the net, and it made Ecuador only the third side since 1966 to lose a World Cup match after striking the woodwork three times, alongside the Netherlands (2014) and Brazil (1990). The victory puts Ivory Coast in a strong position to finally reach the knockout rounds; a defeat against Germany in their next fixture would be of little consequence if they then beat Curaçao.
