Cobolli downs De Minaur in straight sets, Paolini outlasts Eala to reach Wimbledon quarterfinals
Flavio Cobolli beat Alex De Minaur 7-5, 7-6(4), 6-3, while Jasmine Paolini edged Alexandra Eala 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 on Monday at Wimbledon, sending both Italians into the last eight.
Cobolli sweeps past De Minaur
Flavio Cobolli, seeded ninth, needed just three sets to dispatch world number six Alex De Minaur on Court 1. The Italian broke late in the first set to take it 7-5, then saved a set point in the second before dominating the tiebreak 7-4. A single break in the third sealed a 6-3 finish and a second consecutive Wimbledon quarterfinal for the Roman, who fell to Novak Djokovic at this stage last year.
I felt tired, I'm happy to have won in three sets, it's important to have energy for the next round. This year it's very hot, thank you for coming here. I'm happy and proud of myself.
Cobolli had never beaten De Minaur in two previous meetings, both in 2024 (Vienna and the Australian Open). He will face the winner of Grigor Dimitrov and Arthur Fery for a place in the semifinals.
Paolini survives Eala test
Jasmine Paolini, the world number 17 and 13th seed, fought past 21-year-old Alexandra Eala 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in two hours and 23 minutes on Centre Court. The Filipino, ranked 32, had stunned defending champion Iga Swiatek in the previous round and held a 1-0 head-to-head edge after a straight-sets win in Dubai last February. Paolini recovered from a mid-match dip to break twice in the decider and close out the victory.
There is a lot of respect between us, I like him as a person and as a player, even though I don't like playing against him.
Paolini will meet Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk, the 12th seed, who beat Ashlyn Krueger 6-4, 6-4. Kostyuk is ranked 13th in the world.
What's next
Both Italians return on Wednesday for the quarterfinals. Cobolli awaits the Dimitrov-Fery outcome, while Paolini faces Kostyuk. The doubles team of Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori also took the court on Monday against Krajicek and Mektic.
